When I was a little girl I can recall my father saying that certain animals could not be hunted depending on the first letter of that animal and the letters of the month in the year. Does anyone else recall similar information?

That was a old wives tail, that was believed before conservation laws came in to effect.
The old wives tail tried to correlate the letters so as provide the least affect of pregnant females and less likely result in unprepared orphaned young game animals that would starve.
But this system did not work due to the fact that these dates vary from State to State.
There for Game conservation law were set in motion and our wildlife have benefited from these laws.

The key is to allow hunting when it has the least affect on the young and reproduction.
Usually before and during the first phase of breading season.
That way the young are weaned and the dominant males still play a major role in reproduction.
In most cases the true dominant males don’t get shot due to the fact the younger and dumber ones make most of the mistakes.

This has brought about the high number of game animals that were all most destroyed by incorrect wildlife management.
I guess you could say Mankind has evolved to coexist with nature.
For we have set aside land that can not be destroyed or developed for the benefit of the wildlife.
Believe it or not Hunters have paid the bill for the land and it’s research and protection to benefit the wildlife, and every time the fees for hunting go up true sportsmen don’t complain because the laws demand all money collected from hunting goes to protection of wildlife.

I know several people who every year buy deer tags and duck stamps and hunting license and have never hunted a day of there life, They wonted to donate money that could not by law be used in any other area but wildlife protection.
And I for one respect and admire these people.

In Arkansas we have a series of town hall meetings across the state to gauge what the hunters want. We take that info and info from wildlife biologists and forestry managers and we produce a plan that allows the maximum amount of hunting time and animals availible for harvest yet that allows for a positive increase in trophy animals, animal herd sizes and overall sustainable species numbers.

Only thing I know of is that you aren't supposed to hunt rabbits until after the first frost.
