I bought a computer from Dell a few years ago and it came with Windows XP Home.

I just bought Windows XP Pro (full version, not upgrade). I reformatted and installed it on my Dell.

Since I own full versions of both can I legally install the HOME version in another computer I own? Or does the OEM licence bind it to the original computer??

Unfortunately the OEM license binds it to the original computer according to Microsoft's licensing rules.

If you wanted to try it, you would need a full home edition OEM CD to use for installation, as the Dell one is most certainly a restore CD that would not want to install on a different system.

The computer should have a sticker stuck to it which has your key code on it. If you could get the key code sticker removed intact, and place it onto another PC, you might get away with it, but I believe that would be against their rules certainly. So I think legally, that would not be allowed.

You probably would have issues if you did manage to install the Home Edition to another computer because you would be installing the drivers form the original Dell. Either way I think it is legal because techically only one computer would have it installed.

The product key may not work correctly unless you use the Dell Windows XP media (which can only be installed on Dell PCs).

Legally speaking, no you can't install OEM software on a different computer than it was originally purchased with.

Hi. Microsoft considers the OEM license to be for a particular box.

If you are no longer using an operating system than it doesn't matter.

The only thing is you can only put it on one computer at a time

Who cares? if it works then it works.

And, no, its not legal, but they wont come after you if you paid for one legally. they care more about people who never send money there way.
