Hey! I have that too, on the one on my lower back. Someone once told me it's because the needle went too deep, but I don't know how true that is.

Most likely the skin is irritated, it happens, there is minimal scarring with a tattoo and when the scar tissue gets irritated its raises up and can feel hot and itchy to the touch. best thing you can do is allow the tattoo contact with fresh air (if at all possible depending on location). Even though the tattoo is older don't scratch it even if tempted. Usually when it happens to me I let it air out a bit, or rub some lanolin based, fragrance free lotion on it. If it becomes painful to the touch though, head to a doc! Good Luck!

Its completely Normal
It is scar tissue, just like any scar, or tattoo, Over time it can and will become irritated causing certain parts of the tattoo to become raised, and feel "hot".

Usually happens after youve been in the sun, hot water,or something rubbing on it.

Hope this helps!

Nothing to worry about.
The artist was a little heavy handed.
The outline ink is a little more
likely to be deeper and leave a ridge.
That is after all the line they have to
follow to do the shading or color.
When ever in doubt, contact your artist.

certain colors will swell up sometimes if you are under any kind of stress, or even have a slight food allergy or anything like that.
Its your body's way of trying to push out anything foreign to it. It will always happen, and its not a big deal.
I've had my tattoos for 17 years, and sometimes certain colors will puff up if I'm stressed out -- or if I'm drinking red wine!

It's a small amount of scarring from the needle running under the skin. It's ok. If you rub Vitamin E on it and massage it regularly the line may subside some.

It is just the scar tissue becoming irritated. I have a large scar on my abdomen from a surgery I had when I was a baby. Every now and then it becomes very itchy and red. Sometimes it lasts a day, sometimes weeks.

Well I had mine redone in 2000. I can't feel the outline now. I really don't remember if I could ever feel the outline though. If I had to guess though, it could be because the outline was "deeper" (??) I do remember that the outline part hurt more than the color in did. Maybe yours scared (?) more on the outline. You might want to ask the tattooist if it's something that bothers you.

That's scar tissue, there's not much you can do for it other than rubbing it with Vitamin E oil. I've also heard Emu oil works well, but that's a bit harder to find that Vitamin E.
