im really good with math and computers

i have work experience with computers and graphic design, and a strong interest in art and photography

what are jobs assigned to these positions? what is a normal day like?

i'd prefer to be at sea as opposed to land.

You have a lot to choose from. Math and computer skills can be used in many assignments onboard, from navigation to aviation support. The downside of these jobs will have you sitting at a duty station for most of your work day, inside the ship.

Photography can range from taking class pictures at Great Lakes, to working at the Navy News division, or assigned to record any sort of training on any ship. Your skill level would determine your assignment.

My advice to you would be to seriously think about what sort of working conditions you are best at. For example, if you like routine, knowing what is expected of you, and a somewhat stable enviroment, technical areas may appeal to you. That's not to say they won't be challenging. There also may be a year or more of A school before you are certified to perform the duties required.

Perhaps you may be inclined to be comfortable in ever changing circomstances. Photography could lead into travel anywhere the Navy is. You would have to work your way up to such a plumb assignment, and you would be expected to perform the basic duties of the situation you are working in. No one will assign you to take pictures on a flight deck until you are trained how to respond to an emergency. No one will assign you to take inflight pictures without flying time.

In a nutshell, whatever you decide, plan on giving your all during boot at Great Lakes. Your strenghs and weaknesses will be evaluated every second you are there. You will need every recomendation you can get to be assigned to a leading ship. If you want it bad enough, chances are good you will go far.

I am a former Electronic Technician for the Navy. Don't go nuke, those guys have it so hard throughout their school and if you slip up you'll be sent to the fleet as a deckhand.

The Electronic strand is great for learning the skill and craft of computer/radio/radar repair, maintenance, and usage.

However, if you can get into Photography.. man, the places you'll get to go on assignment. Lot's of hot chics too. I envy those guys.

Hope this helps. Feel free to email if you have any more questions.

Unless you have college math classes I would stay away from the Nuke program. The recruiters don't tell you that you will be expected to already know advanced college level math, not just algebra. If you do not complete the program you will be a Boatswains Mate in the Navy.

Sounds like you should go for ET or IT. If you go nuke you will be limited to either subs or carriers and out to sea a lot. All of these rates are seagoing rates.
