At the end of the day if you bet to your pocket than there's not a problem. I myself have a bet 2 or 3 times a week because i enjoy it and in the long run I'm definitely losing but it's a pass time and like most pass times (ie going to the cinema etc.) it costs you money.

Sometimes I envy the UK bettors because you get fixed odds and can do futures trading on the big races.

In the US, we are stuck with the tote and the ridiculous takeout so it is virtually impossible to make money over a long period of time, unless you stumble upon a lottery-like score. As far as gambling, here you are much better off at blackjack or something.

I try to stick to the big races only, playing maybe once a month or so.

hmmmm...a fool's occupation....

Well, if you are a chronic gambler and use wagers on horse races as an 'occupation' then yes, it's pretty foolish.

If you just use it as recreation and blow off a little steam here and there and it doesn't control your life (or negatively affect your family)...more power to you!!! Have fun and stop worrying!

Up 155 Pounds from 4 years ago...not bad if you're just recreational...it's always nice to be up a little. Pretty bad income though if it's your occupation. I think you'd make more than that on the dole or sweeping streets.

You could have given all that gambling money to charity and today a good few people in Africa would be alive now.

There is a rule of thumb.... "Don't bet money you cant afford to lose". Stick by this and it can be great fun.
