My dog ate a small amount of garlic and onion in chili. Should I be concerned?

Onions do cause anemia in dogs, and large amounts of garlic do the same, but your dog will not be likely to suffer any ill effects from a little in chili.
the chili itself may cause loose stools, but not to worry.

I don't know about garlic, but I know that when I was cooking dinner, my dogs would be right there, waiting for me to "accidentally" drop some food. I'd usually toss them several pieces of raw onion. Every time, they'd throw up...but not immediately. Either late in the night or the next morning. I was very concerned and didn't (at that time) know why they were doing vomiting. Through the next several years, I had taken them to 4 different vets specifically for that reason. No vet could give me an answer.

Then one night I was talking to my brother and he said that onions, especially raw, are toxic to dogs. I stopped giving them the onions and the problem was solved.

Now whether or not it really was from the onions, I don't know for sure. But circumstances says it is.

They have since passed away and I have 2 other dogs which I give no onions, grapes, raisins or chocolate to.

The only thing you need to be concerned about is your dog's gas now. :) . Make him sit on the other side of the couch. Garlic and Onion are not "poisons" to your dog. I have heard that something in garlic can make their coats very shiny and healthy. There is a certain dog vitamin or something with garlic nade especially for their coat. Might want to google it. Google is amazing when it comes to questions like yours. Don't panic, and never..ever.. be afraid to just call your vet and ask. If you have a good vet- they will usually answer your question over the phone.

If your dog's stomach is not very strong..and he throws up or something- give him a children's pepto chewable tablet. My dogs love them when we go on car rides! Prevents them from puking!

no i don't think it is... certain plants are. but i dont' think garlic and onion are ones... and if he just ate it in chili and didn't eat like a whole onion or a whole garlic bulb i don't think you have anytihng to worry about.

No, i dont think so. I think that the only food really bad for dogs is chocolate. My Pembroke Welsh Corgi ate a FULL unpealed onion and all he did was just lie around for the rest of the night. It seemed like he just had a little stomach ache. So no, i dont think that you should at all be concerned. and if this info doesnt help you at all, you should just look it up on:

garlic and onions are not good for a dog, but it depends in what form it is in.
if it is chopped up in the chili it is not good for your dog...although he/she should be able to handle a little bit.
the powdered form is ok though.

Both are toxic, but only in large amounts or in long exposures, like a little every day. Both cause hemolytic anemia
