I am a mother of two children one being a 7 yr old little girl -my question is what the heck is going on in our world where little girls my daughter;s age think they are fat and need to go on a diet. My daughter's best friend spent the night and kept telling me she was fat and on a diet and was trying to look like the skinny girls on tv.. Why can't tv,hollywood and all these so called movie stars step up to the plate and stop making it look cool to be anorexic. Even with us as parents telling them -that hollywood girls are fake etc.... and it is allright to be yourself etc.....tv,magazines are still making girls feel that if they do not look a certain way -no one will want them...what more can we do to prevent this....

You are your daughter's first teacher.Do you project a self confidence to your daughter. If you are accepting of your own body type, appearance etc. your daughter will learn that the physical is not as important as the inner beauty. However it is difficult to instill a positive self body image in children, primarily females because the media, movies, magazines etc. Judge Judy says it best, "Beauty fades, dumb is forever." Children who are confident in their worth as a human being do not fall prey to societies fads as easily.Children often mirror what they see and hear. Do you ask "Does this make me look fat?" There was a commercial and they had men ask "Do these jeans make me look fat?" Did you ever hear a guy say that? They don't care . They are confident they look good. Look at some of the guys who wear speedos. We need to instill this same confidence in our females.

One that can relate but in a different way I have a Four year old going on 18 in other word she will be 5 in Aug of this year and already is asking me for a cell phone i mean when i was 5 i probably just wanted baby dolls and crayons and things to do art with i mean I'm not that old I'm only 22 so i don't know if I'm being old fashion or this is what 5 year olds are asking for now days, but most likely children pick up what they see or hear and whats going on around them so i think that's just i guess society now days with the whole appearance look and make up and wanting adult stuff i mean my daughter is very smart and I thank God he blessed me with a intelligent healthy little girl well i mean i have 2 little princess and another one on the way but my 2 year old I'm not to worried about her its just my 4 year old so imen I don't know if I'm the only one has occurred too so anyways blame on society its crazy Good Luck

I feel obesity among kids is on the rise and the society in general need to address this seriously....Hollywood and TV only addresses half the issue...i feel our outlook to life in general( eating ready meals fast food , PlayStation's,,etc) play an even bigger part then Hollywood and TV...(1) we need to teach our kids to live a more healthy life by being more active, exercising, and eating more healthily. (2) teach them that if we are healthy and active and eat well, AND even then we are fat that they should be proud and loving of themselves as god had made them that way...teach them beauty come from inside and not by how much they weigh or how slim they are...
We cannot not change Hollywood ...TV...media etc...but we surely can have a BIG influence on how our kids see the outside world and how it affects them
GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS

Some schools are even taking it upon themselves to notify parents when they think a child is "at risk for obesity." And obesity among children is on the rise, with all the health implications. So this problem is more complicated than just Hollywood. This is another indication that we have national confusion about food, exercise, and body image. Just do your best to be realistic, that's all I know.

I hate to answer this question, but the real answer is "talk with your dollars" and get your friends/acquaintances to do the same. When you see these ridiculously skinny women advertising a product, DO NOT buy it. In fact, write the company and the advertising agency that produced the ad campaign telling them you will not be buying their product(s) or will stop buying their products if they continue this type of behavior in business. Complaining does nothing without action. TAKE ACTION!!

What a great question!!! This same thing happened at my house recently with some 11 yr old friends of my daughter. I wish I knew what else we could do. I always try to talk to my daughter & explain these things. Hopefully it'll keep working at my house!

i don't know, I agree with you, but that child must be hearing it at home also or somewhere, your child watches the same tv shows ect... but i did not hear you say she wanted to be on a diet, because you are doing something right, i don't think we can just blame society, her parents play a giant roll

The media. They are as big and controlling as government and they know how to control people. Teach your kids to think for themselves and not pay attention to every little thing they hear or see. Sometimes it is appropriate to question authority.

Screen what your kid watches on TV or reads in magazines. Make sure she knows she's loved, and give her praise when she deserves it. If you can give her a healthy sense of who she is now, she'll be just fine.

I hope you told her parents what she said, and I hope they take it seriously. I agree that it is said that little girls look to hollywood for answers on how to look.
