it's called a parachute landing fall (PLF).

You bring your elbows together in front of your face with your hands over your head, knees together and legs slightly bent.

You decide, based on your direction of travel and which way your body is facing, which way to "roll" when you land.

Properly conducted, you should land on the balls of feet, calf, thigh, buttocks, and the push-up muscle.

If really jumping with all combat equipment, chances are more than likely you'll just kind of crash into the ground.

Gosh ... Big Stan, the first answerer, is absolutely correct. He beat me to it. You drop, fall to one side or the other and roll. The rolling diverts/disperses the shock of the landing. If you tried to always land in a standing position, sooner or later you're going to have a serious problem ... like a hernia or worse.

they slightly bend their knees and right before they hit the ground they move their feet like they are walking and walk10 or so feet after they land to make sure they don't get tangled in the cords
