I want to buy a pair of active speakers to use for parties at home (we don't have neighbours!). What wattage do I need?

if you buy from normal retails you can get some heavy duty wattage ( its not the totalwatss that gives the loudest, please consider bass, depth wattage per SPEAKER AND THE AMP OUTPUT).
However if you have no neighbours you can get mobile dj speaker from website/ ebay that are louder.
hope this helps, turn it up so that i can hear you please :)

If you're gonna get some speakers make sure the power rating of watts is in RMS and not total power. Total power only relates to how loud a speaker is and has nothing to do with the quality of that sound.
With a pair of speakers at a couple of hundred watts RMS each you should be able to have some seriously loud music even in a reasonably large house.

Hi. Speakers don't come in wattage, they come in ohms (impedance) and efficiency (how loud they play at a particular power level). Any speaker that can give you 110-120 dB or so with the amp you have should do it. Have fun!

what's your funds?? i might say Carlton is sturdy... Hiring a dj is easiest. or you are able to pass out and spend a pair of grand or so on some powered -energetic demonstrate screen audio equipment like the KRK Rokit 8 audio equipment. they're bought in singles- so i might advise a pair for a hundred and fifty ppl. those are expert video demonstrate instruments and could pass very loud: loud sufficient incredibly for indoor events... ok for outside too. they have twin 8" glass aramid (carbon spinoff) woofers and committed tweeters+ a million amp in keeping with driving force= entire 4 amps. they are going to do the trick: severe high quality, loud music. they are going to take an iPod/iPhone source no challenge... The music determination as much as you! sturdy success!

I just blew up my 20-year old Acoustic Research speakers earlier this month at my 10th wedding anniversary party.

I think they were rated at 100W! Hell of a party, though....
