Can anyone tell me how thier TMJ is/was treated? Mine was treated with physical therapy, but my insurence only covered it for a month and I've been in real bad pain again lately. Can anyone tell me what kind of treatments they've been through?

Surgery was mentioned to me when I was diagnosed 2 years ago, but the doctor told me the surgery *ie breaking my jaw* doesn't always solve the problem and it may be for nothing. So I'd like to stay away from that one if I can!

TMJ is not something that is the same for every patient, so in all honesty, asking a balnket question about treatment is so sketchy at best, I wouldn't even recommend that you consider other people's comments. Your TMJ issue is your issue and must be treated specifically for you. TMJ diagnosis and treatment is very complicated. I would suggest you seek a second opinion if you are apprehensive about the treatment you are getting. Also, unfortunately, TMJ treatments may not solve the issue completely, but only treat the symptoms to make the patient more comfortable. I would be interested in what a dentist would have to say about this...Good luck.

For surgery, they can actually break your jaw and realign it or they will grind away your teeth so that your jaw sits in the right position. I would not recommend surgery. The next step that I would choose is what someone else had, which is the mouth splint.

Mine was treated with a night splint that I wore when I slept. It helped so much. If it bothers me I just put it in and dont have much pain in the morning. Good luck with it. If worse comes to worse they can do surgery.
