Yes they are. Cig. filters need to be made of a substance that can withstand heat while at the same time be very porous. Fiberglass fits the bill. you can spin glass into tiny little fibers and bundle them to make the filter. At the same time, the glass won't melt or burn at the temperature of a burning cigarette.

Technically, you could use asbestos as a cig. filter. After all, if you already know that smoking causes cardiovascular damage and lung cancer but you smoke anyway, why should you be worried about the toxicity of the filter fibers?

I'm being sarcastic with that last bit, but I hope you see my point.

no they are not.. This is a very common misconception. The people above are wrong. Just because it is picked as the best answer doesn t mean it is the right one. Ciggarettes filters are made with cellulose acetate. I believe camel uses cotton but I would think that isnt too safe unless they heat the cotton so there is no chance of getting cotton fever or inhaling any bacteria left on the cotton. Kent ciggarettes used to put asbestos in their ciggarettes, but it was proven to cause lung cancer which was why they stopped using that. If there were fiberglass in ciggs it would be very irritating to the smoker and cause itching wherever the filter had touched, definitely the lips and maybe hands. If u have ever touched insulation you know what I mean.

Yes, some are, it's very bad for you. Most menthol are fiberglass. Someone told me Camels aren't, they're cotton, that's why I smoke them. Fiberglass will most assuredly give you cancer faster than cotton filters.
