I have no experience with tattoos at all, so this may be a stupid question. I have general idea of what I want, I want a tiger with my initals worked in the stripes, and three baby tigers with my kid's intials. Can I go to a tattoo studio with just that vauge of an idea, or should I try to get someone to draw something up for me? If a tattoo artist does the drawing would they charge for that? I'm mainly concerned about finally seeing it drawn up and it looking really stupid and not getting it. Any thoughts on how much that might cost?

I've never been charged for a sketch.
Just a stencil...and never been charged
for changing my mind. Just the work.

In my extremely biased, arrogant opinion, the pain of a given area should be tertiary at best to the decision of getting a tattoo. I say this after finding out *precisely* how much a tattoo on the spine feels, and yet would do it again in a heartbeat for the above mentioned reason. A good tattoo in a location you don't like becomes a bad tattoo. There really isn't any way you can tell what the pain will be like and how you will react until you do it, although if you've ever scratched a sunburn you do have an inkling. I do tend to think you should wait as well, if only for the fact that you're still growing. Two years isn't that long & will give you a good time to really firm up what you want. Note that I am hardly anti-ink, and there are some folks under 18 who are clueful enough to get something they will always enjoy. However, I would recommend thinking about this for more than a few days. Even a month or two may allow you to lock down more precisely what & where you want, and turn a so-so decision into a really good one. Good art takes time, but is oh so worth it...

find a custom tattoo artist. some require you to put down a deposit to hold your spot for the tattoo. you can describe what you want and they can draw something up for you. if you don't like what you see tell them what you would like to be done differently. they will work with you until you are satisfied with the design. the most important thing is to go to a talented tattoo artist that will do a quality tattoo. nobody but the artist can tell you exactly how much the tattoo will cost.

Price depends on size as well as the length of the project tat artists are superb at drawing things that look really good so go on a none busy time like during the week after opening but dont go in to a shop on a friday or saturday night expecting to get a draw up but they can do it and if you dont like one artists drawing either ask another artist or go to another shop to see the difference but i say plan on a couple hundred for time and if you want color that will make price higher but you can get color done at a different time to help off set the price because some shops charge around 150.00 an hour for detailed work so look into and you will know

Sounds like with all the stuff you want on it would have to be on the large side. A good tattooist can go by something you have drawn up or if really good they can freehand the work. Once the stencil is put on your body make very sure that it looks how YOU want it because it will be with you for life. As for charges most tattooist' will do large work at an hourly rate as you may not be able to complete the tatoo in one sitting.

In what I have seen, several tattoo artists actually prefer more freedom and interpretation of what you want rather than you bringing in a specific image you want replicated exactly.

Sit down with a custom artist, and talk about what you want. Have him/her design an outline of the tattoo to give you an idea of what they are about to put on you.

you will need to go in ahead of time and give your idea to the artist. most artist should have NO PROBLEM with helping you out. i have four tattoos and befor every tattoo i have been sat down with and they had me tell them what i wanted and sometimes they even helped me make my idea better! i don't think they'll charge you extra to draw it, but i haven't had one drawn for me yet. but i don't think they do. how much it'll cost getting that tatto depands on where you go and how big you get it. i would say when you go in and tell them your idea ask them then and there for an estimate....sometimes there estimats are cheaper and they will charge you what they estimated it at.

Tell them what you are thinking and they can usually come up with something better than you ever imagined! That's what I did with my last two tattoos and they turned out great!!!

you can ask the artist fo help with a pre drawn idea but im sure the would charge for drawning the whole thing. look around in clipart till you find something similar to what you want and you can have him tweek it and probably the lines/names for free. alot of them want you to be happy because they are permenant and are willing to help
