The first hamburger as you know them today was served at the 1904 St Louis state fair. It was named after a dish they serve in Hamburg Gemany.

FYI - The Earl of Sandwich invented the Sandwich. He was from Sandwich England. He had a love for gamblingand a love for eating. He needed a way to play cards and eat at the same time. Viola! The Sandwich.

I think the sandwich was invented in Germany by the Earl Of Sandwich. Not sure about the hamburger. I have heard so many different stories but the people in Athens, Texas say it was invented there.

It was invented in America somewhere. It's how fast food first started out. One day during lunch hour a regular customer told the cook he needed his meat ball sooner than later. (These meat balls go between two slices of bread.) In anger the cook squashed the meat ball to make it more flat in order for it to cook faster. As it turns out the customer loved the idea and the Hamburger was born. "White Castle" was the first hamburger chain in the world.

Athens, Texas claims bragging rights to inventing the hamburger. They have a festival and dedicated holiday for the person who made them. Think his last name is Fletch or something like that.
