Shorts aren't allowed in the dining room. You could try a nice pair of capris with kitten heel sandals. Your husband could wear a polo or 'Hawaiian' shirt.
For Smart Casual, button down and nice khakis are fine. No sport coat is needed.
Most people wear a sports coat or suit on formal nights, but you will see some people with just a dress shirt and tie. It depends on the person. I think it's kinda fun to play dress up!
Don't forget to pack a couple of bathing suits (I hate to put on a wet one), cover-ups, flip-flops and something to tote all your 'stuff' up to the pool. You might want to pack a light sweater or wrap for the evenings... it can get cool at night on the deck or in the air conditioning on the ship. Also, take some work-out clothes and sneakers... you'll feel better about everything you'll be eating if you can work in some exercise!!
If you forget something, you can always shop on board (I forgot all my t-shirts and tops one time, and I only had pants/shorts/Capri's) or you can buy some stuff in ports.
Don't forget to leave room or take along an extra suitcase/gym bag to pack all the things you'll purchase to take home!

The good thing is that he can change after dinner and wear whatever he wants to that evening's shows and other activities.
Have fun. Royal Caribbean is GREAT!

The dress on all cruise ships after 6:00PM is what they call sports casual which means no shorts, swim wear, "T" shirts, etc in public places. Public places would be the formal dining room, the casino, the show room, etc. If you want to go casual you can but you will have to stay out of these areas and eat in a buffet or other casual dining area. Sports casual does not require a jacket, but just a shirt with a collar. It can be a pullover or buttoned shirt.

No Way! I went on the 'Voyager of the Seas' Cruise Ship in October and when they say 'Casual' they mean 'Smart-Casual', so a t-shirt would probably be ok, as long as you wear it with smart-ish trousers, probably not jeans, you could probably get away with it. A jacket might be needed over the top, just to smarten it up a bit.
I'm sure you know, but just in case, when they say 'Formal' they mean 'FORMAL'! when we went there were lots of people there in prom dresses and tuxes. I was wearing a cocktail dress, and i felt a bit below everyone! They really want you to glam yourself up!! Have fun!
