my Passport expires in 1 months time. currently I am in the USA but cant yet return to the UK. any ideas where or how I would get it renewed ? its a standard 10 year passport

You should be able to get it renewed/extended at the British Consulate (in Washington, D.C.; possibly also at the embassy offices in NYC or LA).

You don't need a Passport for travel to Ireland being a EU citizen nor for any of the coutries which are at the Schengen space. There are some other countries where you can travel with your Passport even if it is expired such as Monaco or Andorra and some others.

Any UK embassy can sort this for you. Phone and ask for the procedure.
