We have a average size room at our property in the country and have run out of money for the downstairs rec room and master bedroom. What can we do for a flooring treatment to make it look like a millon bucks. It's just a sub floor right now.We plan on surrounding our woodstove with ceramic tiles from the 'restore'(cheap!)and want to finish the rest of the room with a treatment that is easy on the budget and pleasing on the eyes. Can I paint the floor and if recommanded what kind of paint should I use. Thanks in advance for any help you may have.

I wouldn't paint the floor cause it might mess you up in future installations of other products. I would put down a nice indoor/outdoor carpet from Lowe's or Home Depot but if ya still can't pull that off and must go with paint then I'd use an oil based porch&floor enamel if there's no water problem if there is then use the same product in a water base with an epoxy resin, Benjamin Moore carries it BUT your oil will be more durable on a floor

Go to Home Depot. Buy self stick tiles; the least expensive. We retiled our kitchen for $50 and it is big. They have a great black and white that is very retro and chic. Very inexpensive. Check it out. You can find faux stone, etc. Just make sure that if you lay tile, make sure it sits in the room for a while and warms up. Don't put down cold tile...it doesn't lay as well. Good Luck

Paint does not make a good flooring surface. It wears away too quickly. Oil based paint would be best if you must. Carpet is your least expensive option for flooring. Price ranges from $1.99 per square foot installed with pad to $6.00 per square foot on average. Something decent would be around $3.00. Next would be a wood look laminate that you can install yourself. It's about $1.49 per square foot for something decent. You will also need a foam underlayment, quarter round and transition strips. Figure around another $1.00 per square foot. For a total of $2.49 if you install it yourself.
Good Luck with your project.
