Using the MS Word function for an index, you can insert an index into an existing document; it will index all words you specify. To create the list of words, you can go through the document one by one and identify them or use the "Auto Mark" feature.

To use "Auto Mark" - create another document with a list of the words you want indexed. Click Insert - Reference - Index and Tables and click the Auto Mark button. From the file selection window, choose your file with your list of words and it will identify every instance of those words in your existing document. Then insert the index itself, which will pull the page number (or whatever you identify) into the index page.

A bit o' cut and paste from Word Help:

To create an index, you must first mark the index entries in your document. To mark an entry, just select the text, assign it an index entry name, and then watch Microsoft Word insert a special XE (Index Entry) field.

You can manually mark each index entry, or you can automatically mark each occurrence of the index entry. To speed up indexing, you can also use a concordance file to automatically mark multiple index entries at the same time.

After you've marked all the index entries, you choose an index design and build the finished index. Word then collects the index entries, sorts them alphabetically, references their page numbers, finds and removes duplicate entries from the same page, and displays the index in the document.

Design and build an index
1. Mark the index entries in your document.
2. Click where you want to insert the finished index.
3. To make sure that the document is paginated correctly, you need to hide field codes and hidden text. If the XE (Index Entry) fields are visible, click Show/Hide on the Standard toolbar.
4. On the Insert menu, click Index and Tables, and then click the Index tab.
5. Do one of the following:
• To use one of the available designs, click a design in the Formats box.
• To design a custom index layout, choose the options you wan6. Select any other index options that you want.
Tip To sort words that begin with an accented letter under separate headings, select the Headings for accented letters check box. For example, you can sort words that begin with Ø and A separately.
