I suggest you to read about the great works of William Shakespeare and the other great English Authors and Poets. Read English Newspapers daily aloud to improve your spoken English. Watch English News on TV. Also chatting on Internet helps you to enhance your English knowledge.

It is not a hard nut to crack. First thing I suggest learn one word from Dictionary, if you do it for your life time imagine how many words you would have learnt. Secondly read a local English News paper and try to translate one paragraph from the Editorial page into your mother tongue. Listen to Radio/TV news both in English and your Mother tongue - watch for the pronunciation. This is enough for colloquial English chat. But if you want to practise Grammatical English, take Grammar exercises from "Wren and Martin" book and do them regularly. Try to speak in English standing before a mirror with sentences of your own. Slowly start writing small essays without grammatical errors. With all this you will become versatile with English in 6 months, provided you put your hard work. Wish you all the best.

Read more books, watch TV (documentaries and educational would probably be better), you can buy books that are for teaching proper English, or try having conversations in English with a person that can correct you. Practice makes perfect.
