It's about a man who is living with his father's wife, and Paul is telling the Corinthian community how to deal with it. He says in 5:5:
"you are to hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord."

This sounds like such a strange idea to me. Hand him over to Satan? What is Paul saying?

Thanks!

Tough love... I think that is the easiest way to describe this passage.

I have children that are out of the will of God. I cannot continue to harp at them. I have to trust that if they are in the flesh, their spirit will eventually tire of it, and they will return to the way of the Lord.

It doesn't mean I can't continue to pray for them, but take my hands off and leave it to the Holy Spirit.

hope that helps.

1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

What an awesome insight this provides into the unseen world! Ever since Adam, Satan in some sense has "the power of death" (Hebrews 2:14) over human beings. This power, however, is normally restrained by God, at least in the case of those who have been redeemed, so that Satan can only hurt them or stress them to the extent that God allows for His own good purposes.
The classic example is that of Job (Job 1:12; 2:6), but also note Luke 22:31,32, and 2 Corinthians 12:7, in the cases of Peter and Paul, respectively. In the case of Ananias and Sapphira, Satan was the instigator of their sin (Acts 5:3), and evidently God (speaking through Peter) removed His protection from them, allowing Satan to slay them. In the case of the incestuous sinner in the church at Corin.

God can allow Satan to destroy the flesh but satan can't control the spirit. Just like Job...God gave satan permission to strike his body but he couldnt touch his soul. God limited what Satan could do. Satan might have been given the ability to destroy Job's possessions and inflict Job's body, but he could not lay claim to Job's life or his spirit.

Gross immorality was practiced in Corinth, and in time it even affected the Christian congregation in that city. Paul found it necessary to rebuke the congregation in a letter because among them arose a case of “such fornication as is not even among the nations,” for a certain man had taken his father’s wife. (1Co 5:1-5)

That's the base to keep the congregation clean... If someone is going to continuely practice sin, he or she would be disfellowship!

That serve to protect the congregation from that person influence and it serve as a form of discipline!

It's not only referring to the situation at hand which is considered incest, it refers to the church being wrong. God will not honor wrong done by ha church or an individual. It is hoped that if God will not honor a person or church that the individual will repent and the spirit will be saved. Hope I haven't confused you more. God is patient but if you continually disobey him He will let you go and let Satan have control over you.

well, first of all- If Jesus nailed the Law to the cross then this passage means nothing, but since He nailed the death penalty to the cross it means- this fellow is with his fathers wife- a reason to give em the boot- they were not to associate with so called believers that did these things. and like a person questioning his or her sexuality- and chooses to be gay- God gives them over to their flesh, and they become perverted-Luke 22;31 Satan is given permission to sift Simon like wheat- test him- if we are tested and find our way back to God we are saved in the Day- otherwise we are tried. Proverbs 23;14 you shall beat him with the rod-- to save him from destruction- in other words- do not let the person who is doing wrong think he is OK- let him know he is doing wrong - kick him out- so he will realize his mistake and turn from the way he was going- back to God. if your friend committed adultery- would you say "it's cool" or you need to stop? if she continued in her bad behavior- would you continue to be her friend and say "it's cool"? because it really is not- and this could cause her to be cast out of the Kingdom of Heaven. We are to help our friends, and sometimes it is painful to do . But we must be cruel to be kind sometimes.

It just means that the devil is allowed to attack someone for a while because they continue to sin, so that they will stop sinning and be saved.

I understand him to be saying we should dis fellowship such a person, and hopefully he will then feel that he has done wrong and repent.
