my son is 5 years old and has been out of pullups for 3 weeks. he is a slow learner and finally was able to get the concept of the toilet. since i took the pullup away he didnt have a bowel movement for 6 days so i finally gave him karo syrup and a day later it worked, he went 5 times that day, but now it has been almost a week and he hasnt gone anymore since the karo syrup. he doesnt complain of a belly ache and has been letting gas normally. my only concern is i dont want to depend on karo syrup all the time, so what can i do to help him get back on a normal bowel movement schedule of every 2 days like he previously was? his doctor was not to concerned about it and tried to tell me to quit his toilet training, but that didnt work either. any suggestions?

Give foods with LOTS of natural fiber. Go for cucumbers, cantaloupe, hummus is great, chick peas, olive oil, red grapes, apples with the skin, watermelon., prune juice.

Trust me, a dinner of hummus with cantaloupe and grapes washed down with some full apple juice (juice made with the skins) and he'll be in the bathroom tomorrow. This works for my daughter (18 months old)

Best Constipation Cures

My daughter had a horrible problem with constipation. After treatment at the hospital, to keep her regular I give her an exlax every night before bed... it's cramp free, and clears her out!

Also, prune juice, and fiber... avoid dairy as much as possible.. as they are constipants.

This can cause life threatening injuries... if he does not have a bowel movement soon, get him to the doctor. My daughter would have passed if I didn't demand treatment... the doctors confirmed this after I almost got kicked out of the hospital.

Good luck hun!

Try Milk of Magnesia, a couple spoon fulls and a glass of water. If he doesn't have to at all try warm prune juice, it will get his digestive system moving faster. And if all else fails, and he really has to go but can't, give him an enema. If you want him to be more normal should also put more fiber into his diet. If he doesn't like veggies, frosted mini wheats should do the trick, and make sure he drinks plenty of water!! Also it could be just that its a new place to poop and he's not comfortable yet. Get him comfortable with it... and make pooping a big deal, next time he poops get excited give him a treat!

Up the amount of fiber he eats - whole grain stuff, fruits, veggies, etc.

Try to establish a routine - like going right after meals. (Even if he says he doesn't have to go, tell him to try.)

If you think he might be holding it because he's afraid (kids who have one painful BM will hold it as long they can because they're afraid it's going to hurt) Try this: run him a warm bath with 2 ounces of baking soda in the tub. Give him some tub toys and let him play for up to 30 minutes. The baking soda and the warm water will him relax and go. (When he sees it won't hurt, he won't be scared.) If he goes in the tub, it's not the end of the world - that's why there's bleach. =) Most kids don't even need the full 30 minutes.

Good luck!!

You can give him an enema or call your doctor. But since it only started after the pull-up was gone I would just give him time to get used to the potty before you do anything because he might be scared plus a lot of toddlers feel like they are losing something that they own and don't want to let it go.

Apple Juice, Applesauce, peaches I know gerber makes a fruit juice that is prune juice but with a better tasing juice mixed with it. I had to give it to my daughter when she was like 2 I think. Fruits and veggies. Stuff with fiber always works. Not immediately but it does work.

I'd get a second opinion. And, you can use prune juice or ask your pharmacist if there's any kind of over-the-counter medication that's safe for your 5 year old to help him get back on schedule.

And, congrats to the little guy for 3 weeks of no pullups! :)

Just increase his fiber and water to keep him needing to go regularly and making sure his stools aren't too hard, you don't want to go to the extremes and give him any medications and don't overdue prune juice because a little goes a long way. You don't want to have to deal with him gettin the runs, or making him go more than necessary (it'll just upset him). He's gotta learn he has to do it on his own or he's gonna depend on you to do things to make it happen.
