It's what people say about others when they themselves think they have found the right way. They are mostly all wrong.

It comes with a variety of meanings.
At one end it can refer to an individual doomed because they never accepted Jesus. Lost ="In hell", or "bound for hell" in this context.

Or, more generally, it can refer to someone who is not grounded, not "at home" with their society, beliefs, family... They are, or seem , "lost" because they have no sure landmark, or solid ground, or compass, on which they can rely. Especially if old, trusted, certainties are gone. (a parent, a job, a philosophy...)

I don't agree with sense one, but I note the view exists, as earlier replies show.

Refers to people who have not accepted Jesus as their Savior, and therefore are "lost" to heaven--assuming that they don't change their minds in the future of course. It refers to parables from Luke 15 regarding the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son. Each parable ends with the statement "I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance" or a similar statement. Jesus clearly had compassion for lost souls and reached out to them--this isn't always so true of his followers, unfortunately.

Actually Jean, A lost soul has nothing to do with religion. It usually refer to someone who don't know what they want to do with their life or what life direction to follow. These folks normally wander from situation to situation, never finding their niche.

A lost soul is anyone who has not accepted Jesus Christ as thier personal Lord and Savior. If you do not accept Him by faith in your heart, and speaking it out of your mouth, when you die, you will be LOST to God, and to eternal life for all of eternity. You belonged to God before you came to this earth, but if you freely reject Him, He will lose you, and you will lose Him. He sent His only Son Jesus to be the bridge back to Him. I emplore you Loved One, accept Him today, and you'll never have to worry about this question again! Pray this from your heart> "Almighty God, I come to you, a sinner. I accept that Jesus Christ is Your Son, I believe that He died for my sins, and that You raised Him from the dead. I accept Him now as my personal Savior. I thank You that I am now totally forgiven, and free forever from guilt and condemnation, and that I am now on my way to heaven! I love You Lord for what You did for me, and promise to live my life in the knowledge of this truth. In Jesus' Name. Amen." Now read the Gospel of John, and try to find a good church in your area, one that preaches the bible! Welcome to the Family of God!!!

It means that someone doesn't know God and they will go to hell. God gives people guidance and direction and without his guidance, they are lost.
