I am a single female with an unmarried dependant and I made a little over 30 thousand for the year. I am 20 yrs old. I don't have my W-2 yet but I am just trying to get a feel for if I can have a general idea of what I will get back by just looking at my very last paycheck stub???????

just to clarify... the dependent on my taxes would be my partner and my son of whom I provide ALOT more than half of his income and he is only 1 so I am pretty sure he makes less than $3300 a year! :0)

The easiest way to figure this stuff out is to use an on-line tax program. You can see how much you are getting back before you pay the preparation fee. You can use the numbers from your pay stub to see how it looks, then you can go back and enter the real numbers when you get your W-2.

I like this one because it donates part of your fee to charity.

Just, don't use turbo-tax, they can get your numbers wrong.

go to irs.gov you can get any of your forms there and print them out and work the numbers. You can also download the booklet with the tax table on it. You should be able to get the Earned Income Credit since your under 30thousand with one dependent.
p.s. TurboTax is a great gimmick but unnecessary and H&R Block ... the last time I went to them I had to redo the math. They use TurboTax too! If you can add and subtract you can do a simple 1040 without anyone's help if your worried about your figures send it in with out computations the IRS will do the math for you!

Go to the IRS.gov website. There are links available that are Free for people to E-File/ It simple and you will work on one page at a time.. H&R Block is one that offers this free service if you meet requirements like below a certain income. You can go through the process and find out what a refund might be without actually filing.

I was wondering the same things. So I took my last paycheck and printed a copy of EZ1040 form from online. That form is really easy and I did that manually. I will be getting my taxes done, since for the life of me I can't figure out the state taxes.

I hope this helps. :D

if the dependent is not qualifying relative to u, he has to live with u for entire year and has income less than $3300. than u can file as head of household that give u an exemation of $3300. and about u refund still depends on the other info.

I suggest going to the IRS official website. From there you can use links to the tax helper of your choice. Often they are free of charge. I personallty recommend H & R Block. Sometimes u can even call and talk to a tax professional about your taxes. If it is an in depth tax return, then go direct to a local tax professional in your area. If you need help finding one go to www.dexonline.com

Based upon the little information you provided, and some assumptions of my own, I estimate your taxes for 2006 at around $3,500. Subtract what your taxes are for the year (maybe $5,000) and that is what you will get back. (ie. $3,000-$5,000= you get $2,000). I suggest spending $100 to get your taxes done by a professional (mine took one day) and they will tell you exactly what you owe or get back.

Try Turbotax Online (http://www.turbotax.com). You can fill out the online version for free - just give a good guestamate for the W-2 stuff and it will calculate your estimated return.

You don't pay anything for this service unless you decide to file electronically.

You really need to actually DO your taxes to find out the answer to this question. DO NOT use your last paystub. Wait for your W-2. It should be in your mailbox by today, and if not, alert yoru employer.

Go to H&R Block!!!

I am really curious though how a 20 year old is CLAIMING a dependent who is not your child.

You can't claim your boyfriend or your room-mate!
