This is an interesting question, but I am becoming more and more convinced that no answer can really change the perspectives of this girl. She is battling with two different things, one purely metaphysical and besides herself, and the other a living, breathing problem with society. I would respond to her by saying that Darwin could have believing in what he know and called that science, but also believed that he didn't know where his soul would go afterwards so he also believed in God.
As for the second part of the question, I find it interesting that many people hold that the theory of evolution started a downward spiral of fear and ignorance, starting with WW 2 and leading into the assumption that money and material things are the true meaning to life. I am not sure really what to say, but I might tell her that although people think and feel this way, she doesn't have to. I wonder if she will listen. Dear, you don't have to think this way.

HuH? there is no evidence of Darwins "conversion"
If a lie is repeated often enough and loud enough enough people will come to believe it that it becomes fact... that is why so many fall for the "popular" lie....... if you want a very good example go see the movie Bable... the plot line or the life of a deaf teen in Japan shows a perfect example of how far that lie has been carried...

We cannot conclude that Darwin truly repented and put his trust in the Savior, Jesus Christ before death. That is between him and the Creator.
Media is a tool of the devil and masks darkness as entertainment. Hollywood's tool is to pull you away from truth and the Bible's righteous commandment to depart from iniquity. Hollywood wants you to think that there is nothing wrong with fornication, adulterous thoughts, immorality, covetousness, etc. So, how is the media doing? Very well I would say. Just look at the slew of crap that is on t.v and in the theaters now.

Darwin had to confess that all species appeared fully developed and distinct whenever they were found as fossils, and he had no evidence of any gradual evolution occurring for any life forms in the fossil record, a fact contrary to his theory. Furthermore,
the greatest geologists of Darwin's day, and the greatest paleontologists of his day were unanimous in stating that there was not one iota of evidence from the fossil record that would lend support for his theory that evolution had ever occurred. Darwin stated, "But I do not pretend that I should ever have suspected how poor was the record in the best preserved geological sections, had not the absence of innumerable transitional links between species which lived at the commencement and close of each formation, pressed so hardly on my theory."

The tales of Darwins conversion are meant to discredit his work.
It is a threat to some peoples beliefs. Pity they have to make up stuff about it.
Reminds me of someone talking about "Lyin' fo Jesus!".
p.s. Darwin was a non-conformist, but a member of the Church of England at the time of writing Origin of the species. Later in life he said he was an agnostic but not an atheist.

Once again, ignorance rears its ugly head.
The "Lady Hope Story", published in 1915, claimed that Darwin had converted to Christianity on his sickbed. The claims were refuted by Darwin's children and have been dismissed as false by historians. His daughter, Henrietta, who was at his deathbed, said that he did not convert to Christianity. His last words were, in fact, directed at Emma: "Remember what a good wife you have been."
Ignorance is curable, the treatment is google.
(besides, how could he convert "right after his death", he was dead!)

One quick question. How did Darwin write a book after his death? Maybe it was written by some fundie who wanted to spread the lies about darwins conversion.

Darwin had an idea that was not new and others agreed with it. So he recanted. So what. What he said is as real today as it has been since two cells differentiated. Also, the girls who have sex are popular. Maybe not well liked, but popular.

Amusing. Creationists made up that story about the deathbed conversion: it didn't happen. And had it, it undoubtedly would have occurred before, and not after, his death. Additionally, Evolution is not based upon whether someone believes in it: unlike religion, it won't go away if everyone covers their ears and shouts "it doesn't exist". The theory of evolution is based upon one Hell of a lot of evidence and is subscribed to by damn near all scientists. Read a little about it rather than buying into fundamentalist claptrap.

I wonder how he managed to convert right after his death, and then write a book.
Most of the dead people I know won't even answer the phone, and there's old Darwin writing books post mortem.
