I read that it's OK to drink sports drinks if you are actually working out and the sports drinks are not made of fruit juice. The concentration of the carbohydrates should be 7% or less (which is handy, because you can just divide the grams of carbohydrates by the volume of fluid in mL to get the ratio . . . the mass of water is 1 gram per mL), as a higher concentration will stall your digestion. Fructose (the sugar from fruits) will also stall your digestion. I would aim for a mixture of simple and complex carbohydrates if I were you, but that's only a guess. I don't have enough time right now to look it up in a nutrition book. Good luck!

Fruit is an excellent source of natural energy. Have an apple about an hour before your workout - you can add a little bit of peanut butter with it for some protein.

I've heard you should have a little of a complex carb, like an orange or half a bagel.

Avoid sugar, that includes most sports drinks.

And, of course, don't skimp on the water.
