of all my furniture, my cat ignores the micro fibre. she loved the leather ottoman (tore it to shreds in one afternoon). the microfibre has a flat pile that cats seem to find useless for claw sharpening purposes. I like the microfibre because its very easy to clean. best way i've ever tried for removing cat hair from upholstery----wear a rubber glove and rub it back and forth on the fabric, the cat hair will stick like glue to the glove and leave the fabric perfectly clean.

Micro fibre is great stuff if you like the suede effect and do not mind the synthetic-ness of it. Pile is not as deep and retentive as velvet so cat hairs will part company with it!
The best for cat claws would be a high density fabric like a heavy tight weave cotton. Importantly they do not get their claws into it. This, however, is also not the most stain resistant...
Durability and those two aforementioned fabrics win hands down. Cleanability both are on a par but stain-ability I guess the synthetic wins.
Consider a loose washable cover. Means you COULD replace it as well!
And yep- leather is a total nono. Unless you go for hide and that is impossible unless you are going for an ultra modern simple design couch.

I have cats and micro fiber couches and fabric couches with stainmaster. Micro fiber can get picked and picked without getting wrecked but sure collects the cat hair. I have had to put down little mats where kitties sleep on that couch.
The fabric on the other couch is a tight weave and shows no hair and no picking. It is thick upholstry fabric with herringbone pattern.
Fabric with crypton in it is the most stainproof for kids.Truly when you have kids and animals, nothing is 100%proofed from them.
You can always get cat hair off anything with packing tape wrapped around your hand or a sticky lint roller. There is also this new product that is a whole sheet of tape that you rub on your couch than take it up and all the hair fromthe couch comes off on the big tape.

Honestly, if it is just cat hair, micro is the way to go, but a cat with claws on any fabric, is a no no.. If the cat likes the feel of the fabric, it is history..
But with my two cats, they wanted the carpet in the corner and left my couch alone..

We got a micro fiber suite as we have two cats. the hair is easy to get off with a vacuum cleaner, and their claws don't punture it ( well not that we've seen ). Go with the microfiber.

Leather is a definite no-no w/ cats. Microfiber is good and so is Denim. Cat hair should be no problem on any home furnishing fabric, all you have to do is wipe it with a damp cloth. The cloth pulls the hair into a "cord" that you just lift off. I do it on my velvet chair all the time.

Micro Fiber is the best one. Easy to clean even with hair.

I would go with nylon, its near rip proof... and then you can always have that stuff that repels dirt put on it later if its not allready in the fabric.
right leather is not an option..
btw for carpeting look for the PET symbol I have that kind of carpet all major brands make it now. Stain proof and dye proof .. red kool aid just beads up and gone. Amazed a lot of people with that stuff ;-)

my cats won't go near the micro fiber with their claws. it doesn't do anything for them. they think it's too soft. cats like material like herculon (remember that stuff) they like to sink their claws into something and PULL. can't do that with micro F.
I have had no problem with cat hair on the micro F.

leather-based is an marvelous determination. seek for a producer that provide you with particular archives with regard to the grade of leather-based. specific grades are extremely immune to animal claws or different piercing products. I somewhat have 2 cats that run around like little madmen--up, down and over the furnishings, continually. In 6 years, they have yet to inflict any harm on my leather-based furnishings.
