First there are the notions acquired in childhood. Parents can give the wrong messages("Eat all your food to grow into a strong big boy" when serving calorie laden plates),or the right ones,( "you must eat vegetables to be healthy"). Then there is peer pressure on adolescents.("You must be slim to be attractive") as a result of which some starve themselves and become anorexic, or bulimic. There is also the influence of teaching at school in subjects like Biology, Domestic Science, Physical and Personal education. Adults are influenced by the media and society in general. Healthy living and healthy lifestyle have become frequent topics together with the notion that sport, which used to be considered a bit of a luxury, has now become a necessity to keep in good health.
Magazines, television and the web have enabled people to get a better idea of what certain diseases entail, to the extent that one can self diagnose through deduction from symptoms without going to see a doctor and people are more aware of what is good or bad for their health. They now have a fair idea of what the state of their health is, and an understanding of medical terms that previous generations did not have. Medicine has become demystified and doctors are not regarded as the sacred gods that can cure all ills as used to be the case, and people have higher expectations in terms of treatment and cure. They also have better notions of hygiene, prevention of illness, and precautions to take against sexually or socially contracted diseases. They know the drawbacks of poor habits such as smoking, overeating, and inactivity. Finally there is a greater insight into hereditary factors.
So people look at their diet, their general fitness, their weight, their energy, their resistance or their proneness to disease, their ability to face stress, and can determinate whether they are healthy or not.

What they compare their health to is what will influence an individuals concept of health. My concept of health is this.

1, If I am still alive then I am healthier than I could be
2, If I have energy that is a really good sign
3, If I can dance for an hour without falling down things are really looking up
4, If I am eating healthily, (lots of veg), exercising at least every other day, feeling happy and contented, having energy and feeling good. Only then am I healthy.

It depends. I ain't truelly sure i know what you mean. Media i suppose if a factor. Ask Jamie Oliver. One series of healthy eating and suddenly the whole country are eating healthly. I don't mind but now we aren't allowed to eat nothing remotely tasty in school and im 17. Is that not over the top. And im already as healthy as i can be. Crazy world out there lmao!
