It's far more cruel to allow more puppies to be born who will end up in animal shelters or worse in unsuitable homes.

It's more cruel to keep a dog you don't intend for breeding whole!
The urge to mate in Dog's is driven by Hormones and instinct and isn't done for pleasure! Dogs in the wild may never get to mate as only the 'Alpha pair' in the pack do! So it isn't natural for all dogs to mate so can't be considered cruel!
Because pet dogs are not often kept in packs they usually 'see' themselves as Alpha's and the urge to mate is stronger than it should be. Un-neutered males are more aggressive, more inclined to wander, (sometimes far from home in search of a female in heat)
Will if they find the home of one become a nuisance and fight other males who find the same female!
Females on heat will try to get out and accidents are all too common! They also are prone to phantom pregnancies and have more problems health-wise than a 'spayed' one.
Having a dog spayed or neutered is kinder as both procedures stop the hormones being produced and without them there isn't any urge to mate!
Please don't humanise your pets! Treat them like the Animals they are! After all you wouldn't ask that question of a Gold-fish, or would you?

No it's not cruel. What you've never had you never miss. In a wild pack of dogs only the alpha male and female are allowed to breed so if your dog knows your the alpha of the family then it won't have crossed it's mind. Plus why produce more unwanted puppies just to satisfy your dogs need.

Animals don't think of mating all the time; only when its time to breed. A female only thinks of mating when she's in season, and a male only when he can smell a female in season. At other times they are thinking about other things.
They only miss it once they've had it and are then denied; so its far more cruel to let a dog of either sex breed once.
If they never do it they never miss it. They're not like people; they can't pine for something they've never had. And they can't mate and breed out of season.

It is especially cruel to let a female have just one litter of pups. It awakens the maternal instinct and they can crave them for the rest of their lives, even adopting inanimate objects to use as puppy substitutes.

Its best not to think of animals as if they were people, give them the respect to get to know them for what they really are and like and admire them for that.

It's cruel to leave a pet unfixed and not allow them to mate. It's stupid to not fix your pet if you aren't a breeder and don't plan on being one. It's cruel to own a pet that isn't fixed if you aren't/don't plan on being (or acitng like and taking the responsibility of) a breeder.

Pets' mating instincts are triggered biologically. Females periodically go into estrus, what's usually called 'heat.' They can become pregnant at other times, but it's extremely rare. When they enter estrus the females release hormones that trigger the mating instinct in males. "Desire" in animals is little different than how the sound of food being opened makes their mouths water.

Male dogs mount things to show dominance. Just like you see in prisons, and for the exact same reason.

Allowing your pet to "experience NATURE" for the sake of doing it is mean and stupid. All you're really doing is making strays, creating an adoption headache (either for yourself or someone else), making a lot of business for euthanasia clinics or creating the conditions that will lead to great animal cruelty.

They ARE NOT like people.
They DO NOT have desires.
YOU have NO BUSINESS owning a pet if you don't know this. Not even a goldfish.

I think a pet dog would do badly if you let it roam free in the natural world. Perhaps you should go camping with the dog but keep it on a lead. The dog may like that.
The dog may enjoy some nice outdoor games on a field with long grass. Also dogs like to smell different things outside in nature.

One of the many thing that separates us from animals is the ability to control our sexual urges. At least, most people can. Anyway, my dog was a sex machine on fast forward, he'd hump anything, at anytime, which was usually all of the time. And then we got his balls cut off and it changed him (there's a surprise!). I don't know if this was a chemical thing, or if it was a serious case of shock, but now he doesn't seem to have any sex drive at all and he's not even bothered. Some may argue that cutting his balls off was cruel, but so was having to wash stains off everything in the house.. So in answer to your question, no it's not cruel. People are too quick to impose human emotions on to animals but they do not think like us.

The only two creatures on Earth that have sex for pleasure are humans and dolphins. Dogs have the drive to mate beacause that is what nature tells them to do. It is not cruel at all to never mate a dog!

Well, my dog's never had doggy ahems and she's fine. Has a 'crush' on a boy dog and is perfectly happy and acts like a puppy (she's nine). If it's a girl dog, unless you intend to breed, get her spayed - dogs haven't quite got the hang of condoms yet and you might end up with some adorable but unwanted puppies. And with boy dogs, one go and neuering wont stop them sometimes - they get oversexed. Unless you intend ever breeding, get them neutered or spayed, unless you want breakouts and unwanted pregnancies.

(BTW, if you are concerned about the fact that your boy dog wont have any balls - mostly men are concerned with this - it is possible to have fake ones inserted in sizes from chihuahua to great dane, but at £1,500 a testicle...)

No it is not cruel. Just like some dogs, some people should be allowed to breed either.
