I am in the process of fixing up a bathroom in a rental I have. The base boards and door are dark chocolate brown. I want them to stay that colour. What colours can I paint the walls and what colours should I look for in either a tile or laminate floor?? Also there's this big ugly post in there that I also need to paint, maybe do something neat/different with that?

Light blue looks great with chocolate brown! A light or medium brown tile would look nice also. Is the post on the wall or in the middle of the room? On the wall - paint same color as the wall but attach shelves to it. In the middle of the room - you can purchase post covers (available at Home Depot) and paint it the same color as the walls. If it's close to the wall (12"-24") again, attach shelves so that they sit between the post and wall.

paint the post the same color as the walls. this will minimize its impact. if you do something different to it, it will just make it that much more noticeable. The walls would look good in a soft sagey grey/green, and the floors in a checkerboard tile pattern using sage and terra cotta colored tiles. Both these colors would harmonize very nice with chocolate brown.
Another option would be to paint the walls a golden-tan color (like ripe wheat), and then do a checkerboard tile floor using a color similar to the wall and another color about midway between the chocolate trim and the wall color. This would create a warm and slightly monochromatic color scheme.

hi, if you install linoleum tile over the existing floor, it will be cheaper for you, and easy to install. The green sage colour and the yellow brown (butterscotch) match well with brown chocolate. If you have a Benjamin Moore store near you , you can buy a little sample of different colours and try them on your wall. paint your post the same as your wall, it should disappear. good luck

How much time, effort, and money do you want to put in? I would tile the floor and walls to chair rail height w/ faux marble tile. It is very durable. Then above it do a warm cream shade. For the "ugly" post, faux paint it to look like a roman or greek column. then use browns and greens to paint vines on column and on painted parts of wall to tie in darker brown colour. And there you have it... a "spa" bathroom.

With brown base boards i would paint the walls with a cross between tan/off white/creamy yellow. For the floor you could do a speckled tile or just a plain solid color.

Stay away from a laminate in a bathroom because of the moisture. Stick w/ vinyl or tile. As for colors a light sage green or warm cinnamon color should do.

Go with
aqua for walls and cream for tile
You could go coral for walls and cream tile
Whatever color you have on the wall, go lighter for the tile or go darker for tile if you put a light color on the wall for contrast.
You could go with a cream on wall and light green tile. All would go with the dark baseboards. I would have to see the picture of where the pole is but beads? wrap in something?
Home Depo Expo is a great retail store with 100s of bathrooms and kitchens idea all set up as examples too. It is a spin off of home depo but with higher quality designer stuff.

For the paint try a light mocha or do a tea-stain faux finish. For the tile an off-white or even a bright white will look good.

Seeing it's a rental I'd go with a neutral color like an off white beige color, easy for a renter to decorate with. As far as the pole if it's natural now leave it and if not I'd do the dark chocolate.

It's a rental.. figure it will get trashed by the time you get to it next. Keep the walls off white to light beige semi gloss, use regular lino for the floor, off white or even a light gold color, no seams to catch the dirt and very cheap to get installed.
