Actually logically speaking I understand the peace that many religions preach, however, I just don't understand the subjegation, oppression, or the plain prejudice to women in these religions. Will someone offer an explanation to clear things up?

July - This comes from the fundamentalist, radical, apostalic literacy view. They insist that everything in the Bible is literal, including that women have no place as leaders in the church, etc. You will find it a strong theme in the Southern Baptist church and the independent radical fundamentalist churches.
All the subjugation of women came from Paul's letters to the church communities that were struggling at the time.

So if a church was having a problem with...gossip...for instance...in his letter he may well have written about the sin of women gossiping (sheessh I guess he never heard a group of men sitting in the coffee shop).

The thing is, it is not relevant to today. If Jesus came today he would doubtlessly speak to things like decent child care, violent crimes against women, etc. He was definitely not anti-female.

My mom has often said...if they took women out of the church, it would close its doors within a month. Women keep the church alive.

If you have other questions, feel free to ask. This is a pet issue for me, lol. LEFTY

Wicca is one religion in which women are not only considered equal to men, but in some denominations are elevated above men in the priesthood. In some Traditions the Goddess is worshipped exclusively. In others, the relationship (on an equal footing) between the Goddess and Her beloved Consort is celebrated.

Wicca is a modern religion (its roots lie in some ancient practices, but it coalesced out of the occult and ceremonial magic movement of the latter half of the 19th century), and in some ways is a post-modern reaction to those religions that have practiced the subjegation of women. As to why those religions oppressed women in the first place... well, let's face it, the pattern with the human animal seems to be that the strongest rules, and for centuries before automation men WERE the stronger members of the species, at least physically. Myself, I've struggled to understand why men (as a whole) would revile women (as a whole), and have only come up with partial answers. After all, women are the life-bearers, the source of every member of the human race. Perhaps they were feared for this power?

I look forward to seeing the thoughts of others on this subject.

You don't understand?

Excuse me if I am wrong but this gender equality is something of recent years. How was gender equality in the 50s? The 40s? 1850?

Women's suffrage ring a bell?

2000 years ago men AND woman were, well, more barbaric. Slavery was OK, stoning people was OK, and yes, women were dirt. Big whooping surprise. It ended up in the bible and all holy books because, well, they were written by men of the time, not by (a) god(s).

In closing, and to cut off any christians spewing bible verses, allow me to spew some of my favorites from the New Testament (because the old don't apply or something):

1 Corinthians 11:7-9:"For a man...is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman but woman for man. For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head."

(note: This refers to the practice of women wearing hair covering as a sign of inferiority)

1 Corinthians 14:34-35: "...women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says, If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church."

Nice. Shut up.

Ephesians 5:22-24: "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife...wives should submit to their husbands in everything."

I should become a christian. That is the good life.

Thank you, I'll be here all week.

I don't know about all religions, but I know in mine (Mormon) women are complete equals with the men and are often held out to be the more spiritual and godly of the sexes; man can only get so far without the woman. Just because there are different roles for men and women doesn't mean they aren't equal.

its not really because of religion.........you have to understand that that was common culturally as well during that time period. when a baby girl was born it was common to kill her. her own parents killed their newborn daughter!! this practice was ended by the Quran. i dont know about christianity but islam changed many of cruelty that occured in that time. even slavery was embedded in that culture. islam didn't end slavery but it improved the rights of slaves. every change has to be gradual. even in the US, it took a long time for women to be considered equal to men. and its the first time a women has a chance to be president. the world has come a long way but the bible and Quran are books from such a long time ago it is better to see them in perspective.

Simple: MEN want to have control and somehow believe themselves superior. You could trace it back to "breeding rights" or whatever you want, but it's all about ego.
