It's "nice" if the bride can pay - but it's usually understood that the maid will pay for her own dress. That is why it's customary for the bride to give the maids a gift to say "thanks". Since my maids have been gracious about not gripping about colors, styles or lengths of the dresses, I am considering paying for half of the cost of their dresses as a way to say thanks. But if I can't afford that (costs add up as the day gets closer) then I'm treating them to a facial and make up the day of the wedding. The point is, if you can afford to pay for the dresses, great. If not, then make sure you give them a nice gift, nothing cheesy.

The cost of the bridesmaids dress is the bridesmaid's responsibility. The bride has many expenses already and her girls should understand that. The dresses can be very costly however, and the bride should consider that her bridesmaids have a budget of their own; you should try to work with them in their budget while still achieving the look you want. Remember, your friends may want you to be a bridesmaid in their weddings as well, and will more than likely remember your willingness to work with them and, in turn, be willing to work with you! : )

Bridesmaids pay their own expenses. Bride has enough to do/pay for. Picking the bridesmaid dresses was worse then picking out my wedding dress.

it is very normal for the bridesmaid to buy thier own dresses, shoes, pay for hair makeup all of that.as a bride you have to much to pay for already.most brides though get the bridesmaids a gift such as jewelry, maybe to wear in the wedding.

The Bridesmaids usually pay for their own gowns. That's why the bride should try to pick gowns that are in the financial range of her bridesmaids.

Yes, they should pay for their own dresses. It makes it easier if you pck a dress for them that they can wear again (even w/ minor alterations) and let them be a part in picking out the dresses.
I actually sent my bridesmaids out & they picked 3 they all agreed on then I got teh final say.
I stood up in a friend's wedding & have worn that dress to 3 different functions since.

Normally it is the bridesmaids that pay for their own dresses. I am going to pay for their jewelry and shoes though as their wedding party gifts.
I think that is fair for everyone.
