My boyfriend is a US citizen but holds an Italian passport, he will be moving to England for a period of time. Is it possible for him to obtain a UK drivers licence, or should he just drive with his US licence in the UK?

He can drive here for about a year, and then after that he will have to get a UK drivers licence.

If he held an Italian passport, and held an Italian drivers licence, and he lived here for more than a year, he would have to get a UK drivers licence.

he can drive here for a year on that licence, but after that it is no good. Getting an International Drivers Licence will not solve the problem as they are only valid alongside the proper supporting licence, in this case his American licence. When that becomes no good after a year the International Driving Licence also becomes invalid

Yes, he can drive on his US licence...but for one year only!!
If he stays longer, he will have to apply for a provisional licence (in advance) and then take a British driving test.

You can drive on your US license for a year, then you will have to take the test and get a UK full license in order to drive unaccompanied. Driving in the company of a full UK license holder you can drive on a provisional license.
