i hate that i even have to ask this, but, how do you tell new neighbors, who you have'nt even met yet, that they really need to move their headboard away from the wall???

Sometimes, I think I might be those noisy neighbors.

They may have no idea that you can hear them, since walls vary in thickness from building to building and their last place might have been built like a bomb shelter. If this is the case and they are clueless, wait until they are doing it at an hour that any noise is rude (ie, after midnight, otherwise it's just picky) and knock on the wall. They will be startled becaus they didn't realize they could hear you in your apartment, and then it will dawn on them that you can hear them too.

If this doesn't work, and they know they are noisy and don't care, knock on the door the next morning and introduce yourself. They may be shamed by your appearance, or they might invite you in and give you the chance to ask them to move the headboard. If this still doesn't work, call the landlord.

Personally, I don't care that I can sometimes hear people laughing through the wall or talking through the bathroom vents. I think that we need to cut eachother a break when we live in urban, close quarters. I know that my tv is sometimes a little loud or my boyfriend and I forget where we are, but that's the price we pay. If this has happened once and you are upset, you should relax and see how often it recurs. It might have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It's a different story, though, if it is happening on a regular basis, like every single night.

since you can hear the head board, i am going to assume you live in a condo or an apartment, if banging on the wall does not help, go to the condo/apt. association and explain the problem. they can make a call to these people and resolve the issue. and if all else fails, call the cops and report the disturbance.

go knock on their door and offer them some pudding or jello as a house warming gift. That should break the ice. then tell them your problem. If that still doesn't work, tell the superintendent. If still nothing, call the police. If still nothing, move out or enjoy the show.

buy a cheap pillow, put it in a gift bag and include directions for placing it between the wall and the headboard. They will understand what you are saying, and you don't sacrifice your sense of humor.

that reminds me of a letter to Dear Abby years ago. A lady said something to the husband jokingly about the noise at night, and she received and icy glare...come to find out that he worked nights so his wife was cheating on him. Don't say anything. Wear ear plugs to bed or turn on some music.

Believe me, they know.

Knock on the wall a couple of times, they'll get the hint.
