If we don't educate our kids about sex - including the process, the anatomy, the related risks and diseases, the emotional connotations, and the peer pressure issues, we are setting them up to find their own knowledge, in possibly risky and harmful ways.

Sex is a part of human nature. The more we try to hide it, the more intriguing and fascinating it becomes to kids. If we are open about sex - if we tell the truth and respect their curiosity - kids will have little reason to explore it for their own understanding. And, if they choose to, they will at least have enough information to keep themselves safe.

Not teaching kids about the risks of sex is like not teaching them about fire safety. You're asking for trouble.

And ignoring the emotional side of sex - the pleasure, the pressure, the committment - will only seem like scare tactics to kids. They know sex is a good thing, they know people enjoy it. So turning it into "if you have sex, you'll get AIDS" doesn't resolve anything.

America's youth deserves the truth about sex so that they can make sound and informed decisions.

Sex Ed is more than how babies are made. It also addresses how the bodies work. Some parents are simply not comfortable discussing these types of issues with their children. It is valuable information. Kids have a lot of questions regarding the changes that their bodies go though, esp during middle schools year (I work at a Middle schools). Sex Ed can address these concerns w/o kids even having to ask sometimes. It also talks to kids frankly about how sex changes their lives - Beyond babies, including disease, babies, complications w/ school and higher education. I personally believe that it should be taught so kids can get it somewhere if not at home and have the info be accurate and NOT "old wives tales". The more you tell them about the consequences, the more likely the will understand their choices. If they understand their choices then they are better equipped to make the right ones for themselves and their future. Sometimes kids take info differently from parents then from teachers. Whatever works, but school is for learning. All forms. Including Sex ED

I believe a certain amount of sexual education is needed in schools because there are several parents out there that rely on the public schooling system to do everything for their child, including teaching the body basics. Ideally all children should learn about puberty and sex from their parents, unfortunately that will not happen, so our schooling system has stepped in. I believe it is unfortunate how young our children are being subjected to the "education" .My son's public sex ed began in 5th grade with the viedos "when a boy becomes a man" , and "when a girl becomes a women" I was the only mom who had requested he not see these videos until later... he felt left out, so I allowed him to attend and we discussed it further at home. It seems necessary as our young children are allowed to mature much at a much faster rate than previous generations, that the rate of sexual education is also advanced.

We need Sex Ed in our schools because most parents give wholly inaccurate or incomplete information to their children about sex. Some kids also will not listen to their parents talk about "icky" stuff. Just reading Yahoo Answers will show you how ignorant many people are about sexual issues. Schools are for learning about ALL important facts, including sex.

to contribute to well-roundedness and to properly introduce/contextualize sexuality. sex based on TV and hearsay is not really "educational."
