Well you are giving enough time to get a new tax disc before your tax disc is out of date but now they are really strict and they know as soon as its out of date and you get an £80 Fine.
so make sure you buy it before don't dint have an excuse now as you can buy it on-line

"If you choose to drive your vehicle on a road without displaying a valid tax disc then you commit an offence and risk getting fined. However there is an exemption for the first 5 working days of the month from displaying a valid tax disc. The exemption will only apply in the month when the tax disc commences and where an application for a new tax disc has been made BEFORE the old one expires. Drivers should continue to display the previous tax disc until the new one arrives. After 5 days the offence will be committed if the new tax disc is not displayed Purchasing a tax disc on line can take up to 5 days so make sure you do it in plenty of time."

As someone said, it used to be 14 days grace, now it is none. My neighbour recently had his car towed away by the council on Jan 7, it ran out in December. They wanted big money to stop it being crushed, so he told them to stuff it, so the council [not the police] are getting nasty.

None... if you keep your car on a public road then by law it must be taxed. If you do not keep it on public land then you can SORN it instead. The DVLA can check if you have taxed your car or not and if it isn't taxed or sorned by the right time then they can issue and immediate fine. It used to be £80... my car doesn't take much more than that to tax so i wouldn't take the chance!

some coppers can be basterds and will clamp you the day after it runs out.
if you get pulled and you say you didnt realise and you'll pay it and of week when you get paid.
they should let you off with a few days. otherwise they'll tow your car and it'll cost a bit to get it back

In Texas, USA, they give you 5 days after, following the month it expires. Depends on your state.
