You can fight depression without medication.
It does help to have a good counselor if you can find one.

First, eat healthy and regularly. If you don't feel like eating, still eat a little bit so your blood sugar isn't contantly going up and down. Don't underestimate how your physical health can affect your mood.

Second, do try to exercise. Even if it's just walking a bit every day.

Third, try to understand the root of your depression. When you become depressed, write down your thoughts and feelings. Determine what your negative thoughts are and work on keeping them from pulling you down into depression.
Often depression starts with little negative thoughts and leads to irrational thinking.
Do some research on this and you will see what I mean.

Find motivational things that can make you feel better and use them whenever you need them.

And last, seek help from others. Establish a support system. Find people you know you can count on when you start to feel down - and call them or find some way to talk to them!

Ive used medication in the past to treat depression and to tell you the truth, talking to someone like a councilor is a lot better than just taking pills. The best thing for people with depression is exercise,go for a walk, run, anything and i guarantee if you keep it up on a regular basis you will feel a whole lot better.
Hope this helps

I'm going through a so called mild depression.I had a problem with blockage in my heart.Even after life saving stents being placed,I still have the disease CAD.My Dr prescribed medication for depression ,but I was already on so many for my heart I decided not to take them and I told my Dr. I was going to try to get through it without meds.So here I am 7 months later.I still have days when I get Depressed. You feel alone and hopeless, some times crying over feelings about family and the way you have lived your life.I believe in God and that helps me more than anything.I try to face the reality of everything even if its not what I want. Try to stay busy and around people that love and care for you, that's the best medicine .The medication the Dr's. give you will just numb your feelings and emotions, you may have to take them for years. If you ever start thinking of taking your life then you need to be on meds. Its up to you, fight it if you can if you see you cant then take your Dr's. advice.Hope you get well if your having this problem.Have faith in yourself.

I am yes and no about using medication for depression. I think it depends on the severity of it. For example, if it's about work or self esteem, I think you can fight depression without medication. The thing is to stay positive and optimistic. Find the good things about your situation. If its because of a job or career take time to stop and think about what you would enjoy doing, you can do anything you want. If its about self esteem think about your greatest qualities physically and emotionally. On the other hand, if you have suffered a loss of a loved one it's best to see a doctor about it. I think that , that is something no one can handle on there own. Talk to your doctor about what would be the best medication for you. God Bless!

A lot depends on the severity and origin of the depression. Whether the depression is situational or endogenous and it's severity relative to each instance.

I suppose you can "white knuckle" it for quite awhile, but if it is a protracted depressive episode you can wind up in trouble. Not only that but it is emotionally painful and your quality of life sucks.

Medications prescribed by a psychiatrist specializing in psychopharmacology and a good "talk therapy" psychologist or therapist is a winning combination.

Staying busy keeps your brain off your problems and dont sit around and feel sorry for yourself. That was the only thing that helped when my fiance died. The anti depression medicine didnt do anything but make my crazier. Hobbies help too

Yes. I do everyday. Im 17 and bipolar. It sucks! But i try and deal. Nothing really works... i have an alcohol addiction (kinda) and a cutting problem.. That's really what "helps" me. I now have a councelor (from having to get a protective order on my ex). It doesn't really help to talk to a councelor... but ya... Nothing works, it just sucks, and you have to put up with it. but only if you want to..
