For the past couple of days I have had pain when I swallow. Nyquil and cough drops are not working.

one time throat pain doesn't imply that u need ur tonsils to be removed.
Recurrent throat pains and inability to swallow makin you to abstain from ur work can call upon for tonsillectomy.
If there is no other reason for ur pain,some decongestants and antibiotic can suffice ur trreatment. TRy avoiding spicy food and take salt water gargles

Only your doctor can recommend that. But if it needs to be done, then get it over with......the older you are, the more dangerous this operation is.
