i was wondering why do people tailgate? even if there isnt a lane open, someone who is tailgating could smash into the car ahead of them causing an explosion or killing the person or other persons ahead of that car. i was driving 10 miles above the speed limit recently and a young girl was tailgating me and wouldnt stop. i was temped to tell her she could kill someone this way. but perhaps tailgaters do not know they can murder someone, including themselves. so i was just wondering why people do this, evben when the person is going at a good speed.

in response to one of the replies, the car ahead of you could most definitely explode upon impact. all it takes is a full tank of gas and a car smashing into it. many car accidents result in car explosions. the media for some reason does not make the public aware of these grissly details.

i have a hard time understanding why another poster said that cars can not explode in rear accidents. they absolutely can. i suggest you really look into the matter.

People who tailgate are fools--and very stupid. They think that by tailgating, they will either intimidate the driver ahead to driving faster, or changing lanes. If there is an unseen need to brake quickly, obviously, the brainless tailgater will rear-end the car in front. Or, if the tailgater needs to brake quickly, the result is the same. But some drivers don't think that far ahead--they are the ones who shouldn't be driving at all.

Their are actually many answers but only one truth. They are idiots. Some think they are drafting and saving gas. some think it will make you go faster so when the cops radar catche you it will be you who gets the ticket, and they are right. Some think they are protected in all that metal, they are wrong. The reality they are quite apt to kill someone. When that happens to you slow down to, tapp your brakes to signal them to back off. If they don't slow down to the minimal speed limit if need be. It is better that they go around you than kill you. If they become a problem, this is the only time I will say use the cell phone and call for assistance make sure you can describe the vehicle and driver and possibly get the plate number. Do not stop, to many psycho with guns and bad intentions out there.
Remember no matter how much they may infuriate you, be a better person than them. Do not let anything they do drag you down to their level.

Everyone has tailgated at sometime or another. It gets annoying when there are cars in every lane on the freeway and you are stuck. I admit, I tail gate every once in a while. There is a point when it is dangerous, but there is nothing you can do. My advice to you is be aware of the cars around you and pay attention if a car is jumping from lane to lane. The only thing you can do, is either let them pass or clear the way. By doing that, you could easily avoid a dangerous situation. Also, don't let your anger take over and get road rage, thats just as dangerous!

properly, i will say Auburn. Very underrated on Gameday. also, Tennessee and LSU followers understand a thanks to tailgate. outdoors of the SEC, i imagine Michian is definately a tremendous tailgating position.

First of all a car can not explode from a rear collision. Secondly, why not get out of their way. Let the cops deal with them when they get caught. The worst thing you can do is start tapping your brakes, that will definitely cause an accident. You don't know the reason why they are speeding, it could be that a family member is in trouble and do you want to be the reason for that person to suffer. I didn't think so. Just get out of the way and everything will be alright.

there are probably a few reasons. they like to drive too fast, they are in a hurry, they like or are unaware they are breaking the law. If you really feel that unsafe, just pull over and let them go by if you can and if you're not on a major highway. when you get back on the road, you'll probably see them further on down the road pulled over by the cops for speeding, or in an accident.

I think it has something to do with the personality trait of wanting to be 'first'. Most of the ones I know do the same thing in conversation (butting in), in line at the bank (creeping into your space), in their family (I am the center), even switching TV stations without warning, and are also VERY likely to really hate it when it happens to them!

They tailgate because they do not know how to drive. and were not suppose to reply to people's replies this is a question and answer website not a personal opinions website. Of what you just did.

Agree with you 100%--see it all the time, and have for years.

For some dumb reason, some tailgaters think doing that will get them where they're going faster. :D

I've always wondered the same thing myself. I think it's because they're inconsiderate morons.
