There may have been and probably are greater fighters, but five the men I've seen in my lifetime who were just so technically sound and well schooled in the fundamentals of the sport. if I were a trainer and had a young man/kid who wanted to start boxing, I'd definitely make watching video of Ricardo Lopez required viewing, perfect form, textbook puching greating defensive skills, great at slippng punches, and setting up/using angles.

Alexis Arguello-The best technical fighter I've ever seen
Salvador Sanchez-Excellent technical fighter that died too young
Ricardo Lopez-The little teacher was exactly that superb skills
Winky Wright-Technically the best right now hands down

but I'll admit I'm pretty young, so my knowledge of the older fighters is not that great, these are just some of the champions that were around in my life time-guys like Ali and Roy Jones Jr. and Duran were so gifted they tended to not be as technically sound as the guys I mentioned. I've never seen anyone from my list get KO'ed except for De La Hoya.
