I think that was true several years ago, but the technology has really improved. Now, they can seal them as well as the areas around chimneys, air pipes, and air vents. The real question is whether the roofers can shingle a house properly to prevent any protrusion from leaking.

Good luck

Properly installed and caulked skylights don't leak. However, they do require some maintenance and cleaning, at least twice a year. Any cracked or questionable caulking and/or flashing can be repaired or addressed then to prevent troubles. I had a 48" skylight in the last home i had for 5 years with no leaks or other trouble

I have two of them, 15 years now and not a leak. Good installment is the key. Skylights that open up are more pron to leak.

I agree with your second answer. Have them installed with a guarantee. I have had skylights in 2 different houses and they never leaked. I loved them--particularly over halls and stair cases.
