Okay, we have a one year old jack russell terrier, and she's a handful but we love her to pieces. I opt to get another Jack ....we like dogs, and I hope to give Ginger a little something more to do. I mean we walk her and play with her, but it never seems to wear her out. I know it's part of the breed, but I was hoping with a playmate that she would be happier and have more to do when we are out of the house , etc....my husband counters that it's one more thing to pick up after and that we will have 2 crazy hyper dogs instead of just one and it's a horrible idea......what do the Jack owners out there think? Please keep in mind that I'm not wanting another dog just so I don't have to pay attention to the one we have, I just think it would help her high energy levels.

Jacks are the highest level energy dogs I know. I own two Jacks, and they're really sweet and playful, but we have to make sure the door stays shut-if they get out, we won't see them for days. Even spaying and neutering doesn't seem to calm down Jacks. (We tried it.) Getting another Jack might help, but don't expect a lot.

I have a 3 yr.old Jack Russell Terrier female, we've had her since she was 8 weeks old. Boo is not your typical Jack as far as being the crazy hyperactive dog that this breed is known for, she has her moments where she seems to have completely spun out but all in all she is very laid back and most content with being the only kid in the house. I do know that she seems to play better with male dogs and she becomes real arrogant almost bitchy like with female dogs. I would personally buy another Jack for her but make it a brother. I agree with you this will help entertain her and keep her from being lonely. With these dogs you need 2. LOL

I agree with others as to 2 dogs being better than 1. That way they always have a companion, even when their humans are at work. The fostering idea is great, but don't just look at other Jacks or even dogs the same age. An older dog might help keep the younger in line and the younger can help 'perk up' the elder. We have a JRT/Bull Terrier X, Bebe, who is now 8y.o. When she was just barely over a year old, we adopted a 6y.o. Rottie, Natasha. They truly loved each other and did as I mentioned above. The years seemed to just melt off Natasha, and she helped our Terrierist burn off energy. When we knew that Natasha was not going to be with us much longer back in '05, we adopted a 3y.o. Chihuahua, Dewey, hoping that Natasha could help Bebe train him. Unfortunately we lost Natasha 2 months later at the age of 12. Now, a year and a half later, Bebe and Dewey are great buddies. To me, dogs do better with a buddy. Good luck

I love Jacks too. I think though that any dog decision, especially one involving getting another dog, needs to be unanimous. If it's not, you could have a very unhappy household!
*edit * I love Rat terriers too, but you can't make these kinds of generalizations (below) about a breed. Ratties have their good points and their problems - there are lines of Ratties that are as active as a Jack, and there are others that are, sadly, really neurotic. Another dog, whether he's as nutty as your current one, is still another dog and comes with his own set of behaviors. Buying a particular breed of dog does not ever absolutely guarantee that it will follow the guidelines of the breed!

If you can afford another dog, go for it. BUT, they will still both need a lot of exercise (like, for the next 15 years!). They just don't slow down. Look into adopting one of similar age from a JRT rescue or shelter. But, your husband is right about having two crazy hyper dogs if you get another! It may or may not help with the energy levels. Every dog is different. It's a risk. But, rescue if you do get another.

Jack or not I think having 2 dogs is a wonderful idea. Anytime I adopt pets it's 2 at a time. They don't get into as much trouble because they are busy with each other.

My Golden actually suffed through depression when she lost her best friend (My ex roommate dog - he took her when he moved out). So they get very attached and I feel are happier when they have a puppy companion.

Good Luck

properly, I say you the two could initiate over with names. If an arguement is coming over this, then merely p.c.. new names. For the main section, Seaton Jack does sound a dash unusual, and Joshua Seaton Jr. is merely too vast of a acceptance for a toddler to fill. listed below are some named that i admire: Brian Patrick Ryan (particular, its my call and that i'm a woman, yet its a guy's call) Dean Luke or Luka Parker Jordan Andrew Why not attempt them with the middle call "Jack" or attempt right here names with the 1st call Jack: Jack Parker (super call) Jack Ryan Jack Seaton (sounds sturdy) *** Jack Micheal Jack Jordan (an amazing "JJ" element going on) properly, have relaxing and that i admire your daughter's call. could all pass properly!

I would suggest going to > http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=jack+russell+terrier&pet.Age=Young&pet.Size=S&pet.Sex=&location=93266&preview=1&scope=0&x=12&y=7
..and putting in your own zip code..Find a youngster near you, and ask the resuce if you can foster a dog, to see how is fits in to your life..Most of these organzations are always needing foster homes..If it works, then you can adopt the dog, and if it doesn't, it is just a temproary help for a dog in need.

i beleive in both your ideas. getting another dog would wear you dog out, on the other hand you would have to pick up after two dogs and it could be double the work, but if you are willing to do that then go ahead

companionship is good.. i have a jack outside.. couldn't handle Dennis the menace in the house... he's a total handful by himself!! He likes to romp and play with our Schnauzer when its play time for them, but he does get a little rough on her.. and he seems to entertain himself while hes alone.. ate the 4 wheeler seat.. dug out the fence.. learned to climb the fence.. but hes still a hoot.. good luck!
