I'm a little confused. I know nuts have a high fat content, so lets say if you eat a handful a day, would this start to swell the waistline???

Please explain to me.

Thanks for your help.

Peanuts contain 600 calories /100 grams .This comes mainly from the 44.2 % of fat .

Walnuts contain 702 calories/100grams . Fat is 64.4%.

Cashew nuts contain 609 calories/100 grams .Fat is 47.2 %

Just for comparison: 100 grams of bacon contain 712 calories /100 grams with 76% fat.

In addition ,anything salted will cause a water retention in the subcutaneous tissues ,thus mimicking fat.

Depending upon the weight of 'your handful' and what else you are taking per day and your daily expenditure of calories ,it may easily end up around your waistline.

Give it a good thought.

OK. Nuts are quite high in fat, as you said. However, the fats in them are the kinds of fats which are good for the body, which is why we're encouraged to eat them.

Whether or not you'd put on weight in the above example would depend on what else you were eating and what exercise you were doing. If your total calorie intake for the day is more than the calories you expend on exercise and just generally being a person, then you'll put on weight; if your intake is less than what you use, you'll lose weight. Whether those calories come from nuts or anything else doesn't really make any difference.

Hope that makes sense!

Although nuts are 80% fat and four handful of nuts are almost 600 calories am I telling you that you can add a whole handful of nuts to your diet every day and you probably won't gain weight? No, I'm telling you you can add FOUR handfuls of nuts to your daily diet and you probably won't gain weight. That's what some Loma Linda University researchers did. They had people eat four extra handfuls of almonds every day for 6 months, and not only was there basically no average weight gain, the heaviest study participants actually LOST weight.

There was some evidence that nuts may increase the speed at which you burn calories. Or maybe it's because nuts are so nutrient rich (trace minerals, fiber, arginine, vitamin E, etc.) that they quell hunger pangs better than other foods, decreasing one's appetite. The bottom line is that nuts probably WON'T make you fat.

Eating a handful a day won't swell the waistline, but if eaten in excess, you can conceivably gain weight from eating nuts since they are so calorically dense due to their fat content. Also, please note that eating fat won't necessarily make you fat. This is one of the biggest myths out there. Fat has an incredibly bad image associated with it, but most of the fat contained in nuts is healthy. For example, walnuts contain healthy omega 3 fatty acids, and macadamia's contain monounsaturated fats which are known to help decrease the bad level of cholesterol in your system. Also, while nuts pack a hefty punch calorie wise, realize that they have minimal impact on your insulin levels (your body takes a while to convert them to energy) and so they won't lead to excess insulin states which is the real enemy of fat loss.

If they are non-salted then it will be ok.

FOOD CHART
1 - Sugars, fats, and oils - Eat really little.
2 - Dairy & Meats & nuts - Eat about 2 servings from each per day
3 - Fruits & Vegetables - Eat about 5 servings from each per day.
4 - Wheats & Grains - Eat About 10 Servings per day.
They have some protein.
2 Servings is like a 2 hanfuls so be careful.

No, nuts are good for you. They have good fats in them and help you in losing weight. As with everything it is portion control that is the most important. Don't pig out on them. A handful a day would be perfect. As long as they are raw.

Almonds actually will help you lose weight

Well nuts are really good for you in moderation. So a handful wouldn't hurt you. But I wouldn't add that to what you already eat, maybe substitute another snack you eat for a handful or nuts instead. They have really good protiens in them! But they are high in fat content so you don't want to over do it.

Eating a handful a day is ok, but make sure they are not dry roasted or salted peanuts. Although nuts are good for you, they are quite high in calories.

Dr Atkins eats nuts for lunch every day. Of course he likes fat. [Um sorry that should be past tense he died in 03]. They are high in fat, but they are also quite filling and good for you. Just don't eat too many of them.
