All major militaries use this technique. Its main purpose is to prevent debris from getting into the barrel and jamming it up. The reason the condom is good because it will stretch to accommodate several sizes of gun barrels. To prevent rust though, you should use standard cleaning and oiling maintenance. Happy hunting!

It's also great while hunting. You can keep sand, leaves, dirt, water, etc. out of the barrel, and they're so cheap you can throw it away when you're done. I have a friend who doesn't even bother taking it off for a shot. He just shoots right through it, although it does affect the accuracy of the bullet slightly. Plus they are cheaper than the commercial gun socks but work exactly the same.

Yup its basically to keep water & stuff (like sand even) out of the barrel, Dosent have to be lubed though.. actually i think the unlubed ones are better they dont slip off as easily.. and you can fire right through it if you need to...

I always went with the plain dry condoms old military trick.
It’s to keep everything out of your barrel.

I also use them for Recurve Bow Hunting , because I use feathers if it going to rain, I slip them over the fletching (feathers) in the quiver to keep them dry so they fly right and true.
