The university professor challenged his students with this question. “Did God create everything that exists?” A student bravely replied, “Yes, He did.!” “God created everything?” the professor asked. “Yes sir”, the student replied.
The professor answered, “If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are, then God is evil.”
The student became quiet before such an answer. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.
Another student raised his hand and said, “Can I ask you a question professor?”
“Of course”, replied the professor. The student stood up and asked, “Professor, does cold exist?” “What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?” The students snickered at the young man’s question.; The young man replied, “In fact sire, cold does not exist. ...

According to the laws of physic, what we consider cold is in the reality the absence of heat. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-4600 F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat.”
The student continued, “Professor, does darkness exist?”
The professor responded, “Of course it does.” The student replied, “Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton’s prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it.

How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn’t this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present.”
Finally the young man asked the professor, “Sir, does evil exist?”
Now uncertain, the professor resonded, “Of course as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man’s inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil. To this the student replied, “Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like the darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love that exist just as does light or heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart.

that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.”

J.P. Even Wikipedia's liberals refute your definition of evil. "Evil is defined in Thomistic metaphysics as the absence of a "good" which could and should be present; it is a lack of something that should be present. ..." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil
Is it a willful act to neglect to do good? If so you agree with Jesus teachings that there are sins of omission as well as those of commission (willfully done). If you starve someone to death by not giving them food, that is the same as murder, a willful malicious act. Neglect is a proven form of abuse, even that of denying emotional affection to a child and never touching it. People without God can be kind to others. Jesus put it this way; " If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" They are still lost and in their sins without God and without hope nevertheless. An evil man cannot comprehend his evil.

Society cannot measure good and evil by one another's behavior patterns. "For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise." II Corinthians 10
Man will always become more depraved without God. This attitude leads to occultic mindsets with men like Hitler in the lead. Yes, everyone is evil without God. It is the sin nature and when it is fed more than the spiritual man, it will thrive and bring forth death. The very nature of abusers may begin with words and when that sin is finished, full blown, it is murder like Scott Peterson did. Ted Bundy said he loved to kill. Are you going to let his "perceptions" of good and evil decide what is right or wrong for you also?? That's why God tells us right from wrong. Everyone is on equal footing just like our civil laws use to be.

JP even the worst serial killer has a conscience. They know they are wicked. They weren't BORN that way. It is simply seared with a hot iron with every time they over-ride it. Dulled to sensitivities.

Nice story, most likely never happened which throughs the premise off, espcially if it had been a physics professor who would have said in the begining that cold/dark is the absence of energy. I would rate this as a nice inspirational talk but worthless as a proof.

What we term evil can vary highly and it's form changes as societies and culture changes - to some extent at least. Saying evil is defined as the absence of God or good is a rather bad definition and does not fit reality. For example many people live good caring lives and do no harm to others, by your definition they are as evil as Hitler or Manson.

You should really look this story up on Snopes.com -- it's a well known hoax, it never happened.

At least you didn't attribute it to Einstein like most people. And no, evil is not the absence of good. Evil requires a willful act, just as good does. Amorality, neutrality, is the default status.

Metaphysics? You want to argue an atheist on metaphysics?

*rubs his forehead* Exactly what part of 'ATHEIST' don't you quite get?

Morality does not depend on a deity. Morality can exist quite comfortably absent a deity, because we evolved with certain instinctive moral guides. The fact that some people are missing these instincts is more proof for evolution, because if the Bible is right and ALL have a sense of god-given morality, how do you explain people who .. don't?

You don't think a lot of things through, do you?

I'm gonna have to say this story is a little far fetched. No professor wouldn't know what cold and darkness mean.

"Evil" is only like "darkness" and "cold" in the sense that they are all constructs of the mind and vary according to perception, which is generally incorrect perception... it might be valid perception but always incorrect. Evil, darkness and cold are not inherently existing any more than anything else is.

Myths are made because people want to believe in them. Its that simple. Whatever the reason is doesn't matter. In fact, if we didn't have any words to describe anything, how would we know if we were/are alive?
Because you see, you can use words to do anything you want. Words are power. Its that simple.
You can try to teach a THEORY with words, but no matter what you say or write, if you want to believe in it, its your choice.
Now please, sit down. There is someone else behind you that I want to talk to.
