Hello everybody!
I just bought a beautiful engagement ring from Costco, but it's about 1/2 to 1 size too big. I would like to get it re-sized...whats the best way to do this? Obviously, Costco doesnt provide this service.

Also, I've heard of horror stories about jeweler's switching out the diamond on the ring for a lower-grade diamond or cubic zirconia when people get their ring's re-sized. How can I prevent this from happening?

I've called a few places in my neighborhood, and they all want to ship the ring off to somewhere else to do the resizing...which will take about 5 days, they say. Is this normal?

Thanks!

One more thing: the band is a titanium band, so I dont know if that will affect resizing.

If the ring is platinum, your local jeweler cannot resize it in their shop because it takes heat at a temperature that is too high for them to use in the shop. Also they would need to re-rhodium plate the platinum after the resizing. If it is either white gold or yellow gold, they can definitely do the resizing in the shop. As far as the old diamond....that is the oldest urban myth. It just doesn't happen. All diamonds have internal identifiers be it laser inscription or just internal flaws and blemishes that are natural to the stone. Your certifcate will identify these for you like a map. That way you can tell it is the same stone coming back to you. Also be prepared to pay twice the normal cost for resizing platinum. By the way, chain stores and chain jewelry stores are not usually the best places to buy jewelry. Independent stores are typically much better in quality of merchandise.

Most jewelers don't have guys that do the resizing on location, specially the well known name stores cause they are more of a corporation and would send such items to a 1 store location.

Look in the phone book or ask around for custom jewelers, these guys will do it in the shop right there, and these guys know more as they build custom rings all day long, not some 22 yr old who answered an add from the newspaper for a job. These guys are not normally lit up with signs and stuff as they don't want the masses flocking to them. Dad used one of these guys to make Snap on Tool rings for over 20 yrs, did unreal work.

First guy who answered is right.....no. 1 thing to do first....insure it...THEN do anything else to it.

Sometimes local jewelers will have a guy in once a month or so that will do re sizing in the same day obviously if you did not buy it there they will change you it is like 15-20 dollars. I sent my husbands ring away to get re sized cause at the time there was no other option and it kept falling off of him. It does take about 2 weeks it is not so bad. Good luck.

You are right to be suspicious of any 'jeweler' who wants to ship your ring some place else. If by jeweler you mean Kay's or Jared's, they are Jewelry STORES, not jewelers. Find a bonafide jeweler who will resize the ring in his shop. Now he may not be able to do it right then, and you may have to leave it with him for a day or two, but some times if you catch them at a non-busy time they can resize it while you wait. It's almost Feb, which means Valentines day, try to do it before then so they won't be so busy. Good luck.

This is very typical and usually nothing to worry about. However, if it is an expensive ring, I would go to a reputable jeweler and pay the money to get it certified. It can cost up to $100 but you will also get a certificate and after it is resized, you can bring it back to that jeweler to MAKE SURE no funny business was going on.

The certificate will also be a valuable thing to have. In order to have it covered by your home owners' insurance, you will need to have a certificate so the ins company has proof that you aren't trying to insure cubic Z's.....

Good Luck

You can get a ring sizer at Wal-Mart which cost about 5.00 and put it in the ring and you never have to let it really leave your sight if you are that worried about it. Otherwise you must find a local jeweler with a good reputation to do it. Call the Better Business Bureau in your area and they can probably suggest one. The reason everyone tells you they will have to ship it off is because they do not employ a jeweler on premises and chances are they all use the same one. You may want to call back and ask who they use.

Every Jeweler sends a ring off to be re-sized. They just don't have the equipment to do that kind of work. And not many are in the habit of switching the diamond. Trust me my husband and I had to have my ring re-sized. We got the exact ring that we paid for in the size that we needed.

Take it to a reputable jewelry store it have it resized. My husband bought my rings for me at Whitehall jewellers and they have resizing service...you usually get it back within a week with them and they do have to send it away...but they do good work...expect to pay around $100 and alittle over for the service.

Most jewellers will send the ring away to have it resized, then re-rodiumed because they don't have the equipment to do it on site.

Hope this helps.

find a jewlery store that has an actual jeweler there...they actually have a little ink pen thingy that they can put on the diamond that will flash red or beep if its a real diamond. Make them do that when you pick it up. I would use a better known jewlery store not some fly by night place. I used to work at Zales Corporate in Houston.

I took my ring to the mall and they had a jewelry fixing/ sizing store. It cost me $50 bucks. If you're worried about the diamond getting switched just take it to a jewelry store and have them look at the diamond. Say you want it appraised? But I had no problems with mine and it only took an hour. But obviously I paid for it. And yes, if you're ring gets sent off it will take atleast a week. Good luck and congrats!
