Don't get me wrong......a person has to live with their own ink...but I would scrape my skin off if I woke up from a binge with tribal on my body. Tribal definately has its place....on the skin of people that come from a South Pacific heritage.... There is a survey on the tattooartists website about the type of tattoo they were most likely asked to cover-up and tribal was #2.....right behind Names. Which tells me that most tribal is chosen on a whim based on its "cool" look. If I'm wrong please set me straight.
thanks

While it was definitely a fad. To me it simply represents another style for tattoos. Some of us, like me, love old school, some hate old school. I don't have any tribal tattoos, but I do have some that people wonder what the hell I was thinking. Such as my dragon fly and turtle. I love nature, I hunt, fish, and eat what I kill. My creature tattoos are one of a kind from National Geographic, and other such sources. So if you have tribal art I am cool with it, as long as you are cool with my gecko and two frog tats, get it?

Still it seems that every time I am at the shop there is someone getting a tribal piece. The artist always tries to make it unique as well. I want a tribal piece. But I want the type where you have a conversation with a Maori tattoo artist and he chooses the tattoo for you based on that conversation.

I agree I have two tattoo's intertwined in tribal! I regret both tattoo's for the reason that they are overdone and not original (for the sake of the matter)! Not only this but they are very hard to cover up if possible at all! I was young and went with what was in! I should have went with something that had personal value and meaning to me! Guess it was a live and learn experience! So In this case I'm going to go with the "cool" phase because back a couple years ago everyone went on a tribal binge! I do find Heritage tattoo's such as done in the Samoan community very interesting (the method and symbolism)! I also think Asian symbols and butterfly's are over requested (yes I can say this because I have a butterfly)! All in all I agree to a certain stand point with your statement! In my case I agree... My tattoos are at least 4-5 years old and now I will live with them for the next 50!

I just got a tattoo, and there is SOME tribal involved, my fiance is 1/2 Pacific Islander, so I got the tribal to represent his culture and him as well (instead of getting his name =P) So to me it does mean something, not just a fad, and I have big plans for my tattoo. I do agree that most people do it because its one of the "in" things, but there are some people who have tribals that actually MEAN something.

I think depending on what kind of tribal you are talking about, I think it all depends. I believe a lot of people get tribal tattoos just to be cool, but whether you have heritage or not, if someone is very passionate about something, and they are thinking about getting a tattoo, it might mean more to them getting a tribal symbol of what they are so passionate about. I have 3 tattoos, but none are tribal, but they are small and hidden, but they all have meaning to me. I think it's all about the meaning.

I have noticed this as well. I suppose it has most to do with it being trendy in the tattoo world. People are making decisions for tattoos because they look cool. Thats stupid in my opinion. Its going to be on your body forever, get something with meaning and purpose. If your body is going to be used as a canvas, then let it be used for something special. Anyway, thats my two cents.

totally agree with you. I think I feel a little more strongly though about tattoos in other languages though if u really don't know the language or what you're really tattooing on yourself. I've seen some kind of funny ink and people think it says one thing and it really doesn't.

I agree with you 110%.

Same goes for Chinese and kanji tattoos, I just don't really get it for the everyday Dick and Jane to have it done.

I think people get it because its simple and it doesn't require effort or a huge meaning behind it and to them it probably does look cool.

you're not wrong, it's the idiots that want tattoos just to be cool, not because it actually means something to them...
