In L.A. (and I think everywhere else in the country) there are no requirements other than the physical tests and you have to be 21. However, in the force we always like to see that you are dedicated so the best plan of action would be to take a few criminal justice classes at your local community college, some of these classes even provide weopons training. Some of these classes include "Into to criminal justice", "Patrol Procedures" etc...
Also, call your local PD or Sheriff and ask if they have a "ride-along program" (Which they will). This will let you go with them for a day and see what they actually do and decide if its something you like. This also builds repore with the officers and your name is now known by somemone who works there which of course builds credibility.

Donut Eating 101.
Haha couldnt resist. Ok....really. Check your local community colleges. Alot of places like that have a series of courses aimed at people interested in a career in law enforcement.
Or maybe do a couple years in the military, maybe get into the Military Police. That would work out great if you are serious about becoming a cop.

I don't think there are required classes in high school, but many colleges have a criminal law etc section. I think there are also police training academies which would be very beneficial. It might also depend on the individual police departments.

All you need is to take the BLET class at your local community college. BLET stands for Basic Law Enforcement Training. They all have different requirements. I was going to do this but I am not old enough yet. Here in North Carolina you have to be 21 to take the class or be 21 by the time the training is completed. Just check the community college you'd like to train at as all of them are different.
