A button is... a button? It's an object with a text caption and / or picture icon, and when you click on it something happens. Like the submit button that I am looking at right now (actually submit is an image, but it's used like a button). The start menu is a button, there's lots of buttons out there. It's probably the most popular GUI control.

On just about anything it will open some kind of menu where you can set 'program' parameters, such as time of day, time duration, elapsed time, power settings, number of cycles, repitition rates, or whatever is appropriate for the device you are 'programming'.
