My puppy has been treated with 250 mg metronidazole and 250 mg of albon for coxidia. He has just added the metro. The coxidia was not present in his stool sample today. He is 6 mo old and weighs 33 lbs. Is there any other treatment that u can suggest? We are at our wits end. He still has a lot of blood in his stool.

I would suggest this product. Even though your pup doesn't have Parvo, this is an immune system enhancer, and is very likely to help> http://www.parvoguard.com/
This product is also very good for long term use, to help him become stronger, with probiotics> http://springtimeinc.com/product/88/2
As he has had antibiotics, he needs to have his normal flora replaced. I would recommend feeding a little plain yogurt to aid in healing his digestive tract.

As he has lost blood, he should have blood building foods. A boiled chicken liver, (if a toy breed, 1/2 of a chicken liver) daily for a week, and the broth from boiling the liver, a little over his food daily..Also, well cooked broccoli.

You can go to a local herbal shop, and find many helps, without odering online.
Or go to > http://www.naturalrearing.com/catalogue/addsupp4.htm
and order the ANTI - PARASITE POWDER:. this is what I used successfully to keep cocci out of my litters. It also got rid of existing cocci that was hard to treat. .We raised ostriches, which carry cocci of a strain that attacked our puppies. This powder from Natural Rearing put an end to our cocci problems..

The metronidazole is sued to kill the coccidia, and the albon is an antibiotic to help boost the dog's immune system.

Keep giving the dog its medications as per your vet's advice, but to help "quiet" the dog's bowels, stop feeding him for 24 hours. This will give the bowels a chance to "calm down" and start the healing process.

Then feed your dog a bland diet of boiled rice and hamburger for a day or so, then slowly start reintroducing his normal dog food by mixing it into the boiled mixture. Do NOT give the dog anything "fried"; that will only irritate the bowels more.

The medication will arrest the coccidia, and your steps to control the dog's diet will help the digestive tract to get back on-line.

The metronidazole (commonly called Flagyl) works very well. My vet always puts my dogs on Flagyl when they are having diarrhea and it always clears it up in just a few days. It will take a few days the let the intestines calm down enough to quit bleeding, and my vet always tells me to not feed the dog for 24-48 hours to give the intestines a chance to heal, but I would ask your vet before you do. Coccidia can be very hard to treat and it may take a while for it to clear up (I think that my pup was on albon for about a month and a half). Just because it was not seen in the sample today, it does not mean that your pup is coccidia free. All that it means is that they coccidia protozoan is not being shed today.

Coccidia (a.k.a. isospora)

The blood could very well be because he is going to the bathroom a lot. Be sure to keep the environment clean (clean up after every potty outside) so he doesn't re-infect himself. Medication has to be given until the diarrhea stops and his immunity is up (usually 1-2 weeks).

Good luck. Just do as your vet prescribed and your puppy will get better. Keep him well hydrated while the loose stools continue!

Flagyl (Metronidazole) works VERY well for internal infections, give it 2-3 days to kick in though. Did they check for Giardia??

Meanwhile, feed him some canned pumpkin, it soothes the gut and the intestines. Also hamburger and rice (fry the ground beef and rinse it well with water)

If he isn't improving from the Flagyl in 2-3 days, you need to go back. Watch for dehydration: Pull up the skin on his neck, if it doesn't fall back into place, he's dehydrated. You can offer him gatoraide or pedialite.

If the coccidia isn't present anymore, than why do you want another treatment. Usually the puppy has to take the meds for 10 days in order to be completly effective. So I'd just wait and finish the meds you are using. It's not good to keep switching meds.

Coccidia can be hard to get rid of. You'll need to make sure you clean up any contaminated waste left outside in order to break the cycle of reinfestation. Coccidia is an organism/parasite that infects the intestines.Good luck!
