I use to have a rosary but I threw it away after I read the bible. The bible says that we are to not have anything that is of heaven or earth, I believe that this would include crosses with Jesus on them, crosses, pictures, or any other kind of symbol, or metal, or gold, or anything like that.

Shouldn't all we need to remind us of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us is our faith? That is all I need. I do not need anything else.

This is for Paulcyp.......well then what is it when people pray with a rosary in their arms? Or pray to the Virgin Mary while looking at a false picture of her? Or look at a false picture of Jesus and then cross themselves or say a prayer, or flock to the seen of a false face of Jesus in a tree and pray?

You are right, Christians are not to worship any thing or anyone...Just GOD and him only are we to serve.
God's holy word is all we need to LOOK to for inspiration and reminders of Just How Great GOD is, and how great the Sacrifice that Jesus made still is today.
We are not to make any graven images of what we think GOD, Jesus, angels or any other heavenly or earthly thing to worship, we are only to worship God and WORSHIP him the way GOD says to.

Why are some Christians so forgetful that they need constant "reminders", crosses, Jesus statues, Mary statues, rosaries, pictures of Jesus etc. to remind them that Jesus died for us. Isn't that why we have the bible and are told to read it every day? Are these "reminders" or do they need to see something to have faith?

you're absolutely right about the idolatry in the catholic church. they do make the cross an idol, and they're statues are idols as well.. however there is a difference between an idol, and symbol wich identifies, there is nothing wrong withnhaving a cross, its when that cross becomes an idol [false god] that the idolatry begins. the commandment says not to make an idol of anything of heaven or of earth, not that we should not have anything of heaven or of earth

You just answered your own question. The Bible says not to WORSHIP idols. WORSHIP is in fact what makes an object an idol. A statue is an idol if you WORSHIP it. A picture is an idol if you WORSHIP it. Your job is an idol if you WORSHIP it. The Bible is an idol if you WORSHIP it. But none of these things are idols unless you WORSHIP them. Since no Catholic in his right mind would ever WORSHIP an inanimate object, and since the Catholic Church absolutely condemns idolatry in every form, therefore none of these physical objects used by Catholics are idols, and therefore your question is essentially meaningless.

Statues, paintings etc are theatrics not idols. Man seems to always wants to see with his own eyes before he can choose to believe. Statues, paintings and crosses are like movies and TV. They say "Look this is what it was like. Now you can believe." People often kneel before them to reflect on the history they represent. It's not idol worship. It's showbiz, baby.

What distinguishes us [scientists] from the pious and the believers is not the quality but the quantity of belief and piety; we are contented with less. But if the former should challenge us: then be contented and appear to be contented! - then we might easily reply: 'We are, indeed, not among the least contented. You, however, if your belief makes you blessed then appear to be blessed! Your faces have always been more injurious to your belief than our objections have! If these glad tidings of your Bible were written on your faces, you would not need to insist so obstinately on the authority of that book... As things are, however, all your apologies for Christianity have their roots in your lack of Christianity; with your defence plea you inscribe your own bill of indictment.

their idols are silver and gold. the work of the hands of earthing man. a mouth they have, but they cannot speak, eyes they have but they can not see, ears they have but they cannot hear. a nose they have but they cannot smell, hands are theirs but they cannot feel. feet are theirs but they cannot walk. they utter no sound with they throat. those making them will become just like them. all those trusting in them will become just like them. ps 115 verses 4-8

That is the great thing about Christianity. You don't have to buy or bring anything. It is all taken care of. All we have to is accept the free gift of salvation. You don't even have to own a Bible, although it is a good thing if you own a good used one.

Pictures and sybols are not the same as idols...I believe the Roman Catholics are the only ones to pray to them... that makes them an idol.

We arent allowed to make such things for to worship. If you honor the image, by praying to it or bowing to it, then you worship it. Otherwise it is just for inspiration.
