I've started going to the gym 6 days/week. I am in my third week of doing this. I don't need to lose weight, I just want to tighten up. I typically do an hour of cardio a day and I weight train for a half hour twice/week. I try to do crunches as well although I've been slacking on that. I am 5'7 130, like i said I don't want to lose just tighten. How long before I see results?

If you're looking to tone more than lose weight, you should cut back on the cardio and increase your weight training to 4 times a week. Also increase weights regularly--keep in mind, you definitely won't get bulky, just much more toned.

After about 6 weeks you should start seeing results but the problem is you arent overweight. Your results will most likely be slight but because you are overtraining, your body is adapting to the exercise faster. Honestly I would reduce your cardio to no more than 40 minutes and up your weight training to about 45 mins to an hour.

When it comes to working out, and you are just starting, less is more. If you continue at your pace, a burnout and plateau is likely, and you will become discouraged.

I have learned a few tricks along the way, that I would like to share with you. Start incorporating them into your plan today and notice the difference tomorrow.

1. Set a time limit on all your workouts. End the workout if you run over.

2. Exercise larger muscle groups before the smaller ones. I.e... Back, Legs and Chest before shoulders and arms.

3. Change your workout plan up every twelve to fourteen weeks.

4. Treat your time in the gym as if it is your most important time of the day.

5. Make the workouts at the beginning of the week harder than those toward the end of the week.

6. Take at least one day off a week from doing any form of exercising.

7. Change your cardiovascular equipment up each time you exercise.

8. Monitor your heart rate all the time.

9. Go over your workout in your head before you start.

10. Efficiency is more important than length. Have a number of reps in your head before each time you do a set.

These are just a few things I have learned over the years. Do not be afraid to try different things. Listen to your body and never be afraid to ask for help.

Maybe time to get a proper education in weightlifting/bodybuilding. You have no leg workouts. I know leg workouts are pants and you want to look good up top but with out doing legs you will not only be out of balance but you are missing hte point from a leg workout. To get the best efficient (quickest) muscle mass you need testosterone. Not the artificial stuff that druggies and some use.... the natural stuff. This is released when you work out. Best way to get the max testosterone is to work the largest muscle groups. Eg back, legs, chest. Forget abs - they can be built as a secondary muscle when doing proper weightlifting. Everyone has abs. if you want to see them you have to lose the bodyfat that covers them. My advice - look up several real man workouts such as : Stronglifts 5x5 or German volume training or Wendler 531. I reckon you would see a difference in one month doing these rather than a upper body split routine.

If you want tone then do less cardio and more weights... this way
It should take around 3/6 weeks for you to start to feel the difference. At this rate you should see slight changes at about 2/3 months and you'll be all pumped up easily within a year!

it all depends on your caloric intake and your metabolism. Every one is different and results will vary according to each person. If you want to see results you need to make sure that you are working off more calories than you are taking in. Your body programs itself to burn excess fat when at rest and needs to adjust to burn the extra calories while working out. Make sure you stay with a good cardio program and up your reps in lifting with less weight. This combo with proper diet should net you the results you are looking for without mass weight loss. Let your body adjust to the program and you should see changes in as little as a week or two. Don't burn out and quit, make it fun and stay with it.

The general rule of thumb is "every 6 weeks you will see some sort of a result".

If building muscle is your objective, results are very quick and should have started to appear (much less straightforward if your objective is to lose weight, as this also depends on your calory intake control)
